  3. How do male sex hormones influence reproduction? • Testosterone • Made by testes • Secondary sex characteristic • Development of sperm.

  4. How do female sex hormones influence reproduction? • Estrogen & Progesterone • Made by ovaries • Begin to menstruate (get their period). • Can now become pregnant!!!!

  5. How does the female body prepare for pregnancy? • An egg is produced by the ovary & the lining of the uterus thickens to receive the embryo. • Why does the lining thicken?

  6. Follicle Phase • Ovulation • Corpus Luteum Phase • Menstruation Activity - Menstrual Cycle

  7. Follicle Stage • Egg matures inside a follicle (ovary) • Lining of uterus begins to thicken • 10-14 days

  8. Ovulation • Release of mature egg into the oviduct (This is when a women can get pregnant) • Around day 14

  9. Corpus Luteum phase • Broken follicle (the shell that contained the egg) is now a corpus luteum • The uterine lining begins to thicken • 10-14 days

  10. MENSTRUATION • Occurs if there is NO fertilization • Hormones decrease • A woman gets rid of the old uterine lining & the unfertilized egg (if the egg is NOT fertilized) • 3-7 days
