Communicating with other Computers • There are two ways computers can communicate with each other. • Modems • Internal • External • NIC cards
Modem • Acronym for Modulator Demodulator. • Converts data from digital computer signals to analog signals. (modulation) • Converts analog signals back into digital data. (demodulation)
Basic Hayes Modem AT strings • AT commands can be used to specify settings. • Use the ATZ command to reset the modem back to default factory settings. • The majority of these commands are ran from either a MS-DOS window or hyper terminal. (Example): A - Instructs the modem to attempt to answer a call.
Network Interface CardNIC • A board that provides network communication capabilities to and from a computer system. • Also called an adapter. • Most common type is an Ethernet card.
Expansion Slot Types • ISA - used by older and/or slower devices. ( Usually black.) • PCI - used for high-speed input/output devices. ( Usually white.) • Both slots are located on the mother board in the expansion slot area.
