The Tourism Alliance • Umbrella Trade Association formed in 2001 to “speak with one voice” to Government on tourism issues. • Comprises 50 member organisations that represent some 200,000 businesses. • Purpose is to lobby and work with Government on policies that support the tourism industry and its contribution to the economy.

  3. Value of Tourism to the UK • Tourism generates £134bn per annum

  6. In 2012, Tourism Revenue Increased by 6.9% to £134bn

  7. In 2012, Tourism Generated 180,000 New Jobs for the UK Economy

  8. As we speak: • Inbound Tourism Revenue is Growing by 11% • Domestic Tourism Revenue is Growing by 3%

  10. Domestic Holiday Trips (m) The Seaside accounts for 30% of all Holiday Trips in the UK

  11. Holiday Nights (m) The seaside accounts for 38% of holiday nights with accounting for a smaller share of shorter trips than long trips (27% vs. 44%).

  12. Holiday Expenditure (£m) The Seaside accounts for 31% of all holiday expenditure in the UK

  13. Holiday Activities • Visiting a Beach is the Second most popular Activity undertaken by people on Holiday • Swimming is the Fourth most Popular Activity undertaken by people on Holidays • Sunbathing is the Fourteenth most popular Activity

  14. Day Visits (m) The Seaside accounts for just 9.1% of all Day Visits undertaken in the UK

  15. DayVisit Activities • Visiting a Beach is the Twelfth most popular Activity undertaken by people on a day Trip • However 32% of Day Visits over 6+ hours in duration are to the seaside • Expenditure on Seaside Day Trips amounts to £4.7bn

  17. Overall • Tourism accounts for £8.9bn in expenditure in Seaside Economies • Generates 180,000 Full Time Jobs

  18. Tourism Strategy TARGETS 1. Increase inbound tourism by 4.0m visitors per annum over the next 4 years. 2.Increase domestic tourism by 4.5m trips per annum. • If these targets can be achieved, the tourism sector will provide the UK economy with around 35,000 additional FTE jobs. Sets out 31 initiatives to achieve these targets.
