  4. Fair Rules • Complete document can be found at https://www.usi.edu/media/1706892/fairrules.pdf • Highlights • Team projects are not eligible for Grand or Alternate Awards. Signing teams up correctly through sefireg.org is very important. • Safety Review Committee (SRC) must approve Senior Division projects using humans, animals, or potentially hazardous research BEFORE an experiment begins. (see INTEL rules at http://www.sefireg.org/isef2014full.pdf)

Fair Rules (cont’d) • Send questionable project abstracts to Allison Grabert (afgrabert@usi.edu) before they begin experimentation. • Junior Division and Elementary Division projects must be pre-approved by a teacher, advisor, or SRC and entry forms signed to verify projects meet SRC and safety guidelines. • The SRC will review projects after registration is complete via the sefireg.org website. If there is an issue, the student will be contacted with details and recommendations. • During fair set-up, the SRC will perform final review of projects and flag unsafe projects. Changes may be made at that time. Major changes to procedure will need to be reviewed once more. • We strongly urge students in the Elementary and Junior Division NOT to perform any experiments using mold or bacteria. (i.e. moldy bread, bacteria cultures, etc.)

Fair Rules (cont’d) • An abstract, a written report, and other written research log books must be present with the exhibit. • Secure all parts of the exhibit to the display board or otherwise attach them in a secure manner. • Human research: • Prior SRC Approvalfor all Senior Division projects involving humans even if the student is the subject of the study (includes questionnaires and surveys). • Junior and Elementary Division participants must have teacher review and approval. • Information or photographs that identify subjects is prohibited without a signed informed consent form for each human subject. These must be available at the exhibit (see page 10 of Fair Rules document)

Fair Rules (cont’d) • Animal Research • Senior Division projects must have SRC approval before beginning animal research. • Junior and Elementary project must have teacher review and approval before beginning animal research. • Project Display Size • Exhibitors cannot display any item that can not fit within the project’s size requirements. All apparatus must fit inside the exhibit space outlined by these dimensions. • Must be self-supporting • Cannot be larger than… • 48 inches wide • 30 inches deep • 78 inches tall if displayed on a table • 108 inches tall if displayed on the floor

Fair Rules (cont’d) • The Safety Inspection Committee reserves the right to remove anything from the exhibit space that they feel is hazardous. • Prohibited materials include: • Any living creature • Dead or preserved animals or animal parts or embryos. Exceptions: teeth, hair, bones, and tissue slides. All materials must be sealed. • Organisms, fungi, microbiological cultures, molds, food, spoiled food, or substances that look like food • Substances, solid or liquid, that could be consumed • Drugs and medicines • Explosive, corrosive, toxic or poisonous substances

Fair Rules (cont’d) • Prohibited materials (cont’d)… • Unprotected belts, pulleys, chains or moving parts • Projects that include projectiles • Sharp objects (e.g. glass, syringes, and pipettes) • Flames (open or concealed) • Chemicals or chemical containers • Flammable/combustible materials • Dry Ice • Compressed Gas • Equipment producing temperatures over 100 degrees F • Equipment producing disruptive sounds • Any items that present a spill hazard

Deadlines • Friday, February 7, 2014 – Senior Division on-line registration and the following Senior Division paperwork is due. • Project Questionnaire • Personal Information • Basic Project Information • Required Forms • Project Abstract must be entered by February 21, 2014.  • Friday, February 21, 2014 – Junior and Elementary Division On-line Registration and All Junior Division and Elementary Division Paperwork is Due. • Project Questionnaire • Personal Information • Basic Project Information • Project Abstract • *All paperwork, excluding the USI Photo Release Form, must be submitted electronically via the SEFI registration website (www.sefireg.org).  At any time prior to the fair, photo release forms may be mailed or electronically sent to USI at the address listed above. *On-line submission not active yet. We’ll discuss this a little later.

Senior Division ProjectsRequiring Prior Approval with Paper Forms Anyone who has paper forms with signatures at this point (until further notice), will use the following protocol until the online process is fully updated. • Login and complete all relevant forms as required. • Send a copy of the signed/dated paperwork to Glen Cook. SEFIc/o Glen Cook 864 E Cambridge Dr.Terre Haute, IN 47802 • Glen will log in and manually enter signature names and dates to the database for each student. *This process will change once the online registration site is updated.

  14. Awards 50+ Local Awards 100+ State and National Awards Six USI $1500 renewable scholarships for juniors and seniors in high school choosing to major in science or engineering disciplines.

  15. After the Fair • Fair director will notify all sponsoring teachers via email on Friday after the fair. • Awards Ceremony will be Friday, March 14th at 6:30PM in Mitchell Auditorium, Health Professions Building, USI • Any projects left at USI after 6PM will be discarded. If a student is unable to attend the awards ceremony, a friend/teacher should pick up their projects and/or awards before the Award Ceremony.
