Background information • Aging population in Singapore (Singapore Census) • Increase in demand for nursing homes • More voluntary organisations and nursing homes being built and formed
Reasons for research topic • Due to the aging population, there is an increase in demand of the number of beds in the nursing homes and the number of nursing homes. However due to recent incidents of severe abuse in nursing homes (Nightingale incident) and increasing number of people doubting the trustiness of nursing homes, our group is worried if the nursing homes are suitable for the elderly to be in it.
Methodologies • Conducted survey to find out general public’s view on nursing homes and if they will send their parents there(20 respondents) • Conducted interview and interviewed professional of nursing homes to find out her view on nursing homes(Mrs. Margaret Lim, Supervisor of St. Andrews Home for the Aged)
Methodologies • Survey—conducted between 20 adults,11 female and 9 male
Methodologies • Survey—conducted between 20 adults, ranging in age between 26 to 49 years old
Analysis & Discussion • Target group: those with mental illnesses • Tailored programmes • Negatives: lack of close proximity • NIMBY • Advantages: facilities • Upgrading, Renovation
Analysis & Discussion • COMMUNICATION! • Misconception – abuse • Negative perception – NIMBY
Analysis & Discussion What should be done? • Public education videos • Campaigns • Proper practices • Upgrade training process • Positive interactions
Limitations • Small survey size due to time constraints • Interviewee refused to talk much and refused to answer some of the questions • A sound recording was not allowed during the interview • Time
Extensions • One extension of this problem to finding the age group of elderly that is most suitable of going to nursing homes • Another extension is finding out if elderly with children should go to nursing homes
Conclusion • In conclusion, our group has agreed through the analysis of the results that the nursing homes were indeed suitable for the elderly, especially those with mental illnesses, despite certain misconceptions about the nursing homes due to the “black sheep”, which do not abide by proper rules and regulations.
