So…What is an Adverb? • An ADVERB is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. • ADVERBS answer the following questions: • Where? How often? • When? How long? • How? To what extent? • How much?
Common Adverbs That Answer the Question “Where?” • Away, Here, Inside, There,Up • Examples • Place the apples there, and we will eat them later. • The children were playing inside because of the cold, rainy weather. • She has gone away to camp for the summer.
Common Adverbs that Answer the Question “When?” • Later, Now, Soon,Then, Tomorrow • Examples • Soon all of the leaves will change colors and paint the countryside in the beautiful colors of fall. • She will go to the store to buy her Halloween costume tomorrow. • She will buy candy then for the trick-or-treaters!
Common Adverbs That Answer the Question “How?” • Clearly, Easily, Quietly,Slowly, Quickly • Examples • Please pass your papers across the rows quickly and quietly. • Speak clearly into the microphone. • He easily spotted the adverb in the sentence.
Common Adverbs That Answer the Questions “How Often?” or “How Long?” • Always, Usually, Continuously,Never, Forever, Briefly • Examples • Ms. Wherry’s classes always pick team names that have to do with pandas, pickles, or “koolkidz”. • She can never understand why! • Ms. Wherry briefly considered getting a panda tattoo on her forearm this weekend.
Common Adverbs That Answer the Questions “To What Extent?” or “How Much?” • Almost, So,Too, More, Least, Extremely, Quite, Very, Not • Examples • My mother almost fainted when I jumped out of the closet to scare her. • She was extremely unhappy with my practical joke! • I shouldn’t do that to my poor mother ever again!
Forming Adverbs Using Adjectives • Many adverbs end in –ly. These adverbs are generally formed by adding –ly to adjectives. • Adjective + -ly= Adverb • Examples • swiftly • _______________________ • _______________________ • _______________________
HOWEVER… • Some words that end in –lycan be used as adjectives and should not be confused with adverbs! • Examples • Friendly, Kindly, Lonely, Timely, Daily, Early • Kindly answer the phone. (ADVERB) • VS. • The kindly old woman baked cookies for the neighborhood children. (ADJECTIVE)
Getting Rid of “Very” in Our Writing • “Very” is an adverb, but it is terribly overused! • R.I.P.! • How can we replace the word “very” in the following sentences? • The basketball player was very tall. ________________ • The small puppy was very cute. ___________________ • It was very late when Cinderella returned from the ball. ____________________ • The haunted house was very scary! __________________
The Position of Adverbs in Sentences • Adverbs may come before, after, or between the words that they modify! • Examples • We often student together. • We study together often. • Often we study together. • We have often studied together.
