PC Board Manufacturing Kate McDonnell & Cherelle Bishop CSU GK-12 Summer Planning 2011
Overview of Project • September: Introduction to Project • Build Kelvin kit in small groups • October: Lessons in Electricity and Processing Basics • Electricity and Circuits • Materials Science • PC Board Design & “Test” Design • Manufacturing PC Boards & Test Manufacture
Overview of Project • November: Manufacture and test boards for Scott’s class • December: Create posters describing PC Board work • January: Final poster revisions • February: Present posters at E-days
Lesson: Electricity and Circuits • Electricity concepts – current, voltage, power, resistance • Circuits • Circuit Components – resistors, capacitors • Op Amps
Lesson: Materials Science • Basic material properties that we use for PC Boards • Conductors and Insulators • Semiconductors • Why we use the materials we do
Lesson: PC Board Design & “Test” • Basic PCB design • Use ExpressPCB (free software) to design a “test” PCB • Individuals can design “creative” PCBs to print and take home
Lesson: Manufacturing PC Boards • Refer back to Materials Science – we make wires out of copper and need to remove excess • Basic step-by-step guidelines for how to make PC boards • Printing mask design • Transferring mask design • Etch PC boards (using Hydrochloric acid and Copper Chloride) • Neutralize acid and remove mask • Add components, solder, and test connections
Final PCB Project • Design PCB for a group from Berthoud • Get schematic from Berthoud • Create schematic on Express SCH • Send schematic back to Berthoud for final check • Use Express PCB to design PCB mask • Print mask and manufacture board • Solder components and test???
Assessment • Pre/post-test about electricity, materials science, and PC boards • Quizzes following each lesson • Design of test PCB and functional PCB • Create a poster describing the process and the work they accomplished • Presented to class at end of December • Presented at E-days in February
