  1. “WHO” versus “WHOM” Second modeled mini lesson by teacher

  2. What would you insert here?1. ______ (WHO/whom) has called?2. You want me to invite _______ (Who/whom) to my party?3. If I catch ___________ (whoever / whomever) did this, I will punish him.

  3. RULE I:If you can rewrite the sentence and insert “HE,” it is “Who.” If you rewrite the sentence and insert “Him,” it is “whom.”1. _______ (who/whom) has called?HE has called. Therefore: Who has Called?2. You want me to invite _____ (who/whom)?You want me to invite HIM. Therefore: You want me to invite Whom?

  4. Rule II: If the blank is the subject, it is “who.” If the blank is the object, it is “whom.” • ____ (Who/Whom) has called? • The blank is the subject, because the blank is acting by calling. Therefore: Who. • 2. You want me to invite ______ (who/whom)? • “You” is already the subject, acting by wanting me to do something. The blank is the object, because it is being acted upon by being invited (it’s the “victim” of an action, so to say). Therefore, the blank is WHOM.

  5. Rule III: If you have a long sentence, look at what comes AFTER the blank, not before it!!! • 3. If I catch ____________ (whoever/whomever) did this, I will punish him. • If you look at what comes before the blank, you would say: “I catch HIM,” and your solution would be, “WHOMEVER did this.” This is wrong! • If you look at what comes after the blank, you would say: “HE did this,” and your solution would be, “WHOEVER did this,” which is right!
