Canons High School Year 7 By Nadirah Hibatullah, Aidas Zvirblis, Deborah Inyang, Roda Isa, Nawal Obsiye and Sathurthini Thurairatnam Zoroastrianism Good Thoughts, Good Words and Good Deeds (The Avesta Yasna) are what Zoroastrians believe to be the process of keeping one’s mind and soul pure as well as defeating evil.

  2. Zoroastrians believe there is one God “Ahura Mazda”(Wise Lord) and He created the world. Ahura Mazda

  3. The recitation of prayers or the sacred words has inherent power of goodness and helps to defeat evil. WHY are Prayers so important FOR Zoroastrians?

  4. Zoroastrians pray to Ahura Mazda five times a day. The Five Gehs are recited at sunrise, high noon, afternoon, sunset and around midnight. The five different gehs

These five prayers are very important because: • They are a way of getting closer to God. • They keep minds and bodies pure. • They respect and remember Ahura Mazda’s 101 good attributes. • They give Zoroastrians the chance to express their gratitude for the things that Ahura Mazda provides. Why are they so important For Zoroastrians?

Naashaa- Who Reaches Everyone Equally • Parvaraa -Provider • Geera- Who Holds Everyone • Aaeen-Aaenah -Not Different • Har-Hameed- Completely Good Natured • Khrosheed-Tum -Most Determined • Kaame-Rad -Lord of Wishes • Afakhsheeaaeaa -Grantor of Generosity • Feerozgar -Victorious • Safanaa -Creator of Progress • Besh-Tarnaa - Remover of Suffering • Khaavar -Generous • Bokhtaar -Giver of Freedom for Progress Here are some of the 101 attributes of ahura mazda: We will be linking these qualities of Ahura Mazda to famous historical figures, who carried out; Good Thoughts, Good Words and practiced Good Deeds. We will be looking at Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and Benazir Bhutto.

  7. Mahatma Gandhi, promoted India’s independence from the British Empire through non violent action based on Ahimsa. While in London, Gandhi’s mentor was a Zoroastrian, Dr Dadabhai Naoroji who in 1892 was the first Asian to be elected to the House of Commons. Some of Mahatma Gandhi’s attributes can be related to that of Ahura Mazda: • Bokhtaar – Giver of Freedom for Progress. • Khrosheed-Tum – Most Determined. • Feerozgar– Victorious, (through words not violence). Mahatma Gandhi (2nd October 1869 - 30th January 1948)

  8. Nelson Mandelais a practising Christian and the ex–president of South Africa. He wanted equality for black people in South Africa and believed that everybody is equal in the eyes of God. Some of Nelson Mandela’s attributes can be compared to that of Ahura Mazda: • Krosheed-Tum –Most determined • A-Tars- Fearless NelsonMandela(18th July 1918 – To date)

  9. Mother Teresa, a practising catholic nun, was an astonishing woman who spent most of her life nurturing and caring for the poor, the sick, the dying and the orphans in Calcutta, India. Some of Mother Teresa’s attributes can be compared to those of Ahura Mazda: • Khaavar- Generous • Naashaa-Who reaches everyone equally (does not leave anyone behind) • Parvara-Provider Mother Teresa (26th August – 5th September 1997)

  10. Benazir Bhutto , a practising Muslim was the first female president of Pakistan who influenced many men and women not to give up on their dreams and promoted equality for women. Some of Benazir Bhutto’s attributes can be compared to those of Ahura Mazda: • Besh-Tarnaa - Remover of Suffering as she helped women, who were not treated equally. • Safanaa - Creator of Progress, because she started many helpful political campaigns to address women's’ social and health issues, including the discrimination of women. Benazir Bhutto (21st June 1953 – 27th December 2007) All of our examples practised Good Thoughts, Good Words and Good Deeds.

Deborah – I have learnt that every monotheistic religion is linked to Zoroastrianism somehow. • Nadirah- I realise that the qualities of prophet Zarathustra can be compared to many famous reformers of society. • Sathu- I’ve found that they wear a white cloth over their mouth to keep the fire as pure as possible since it represents Ahura Mazda. Our views

  13. Nawal- I have learnt that the some of the 101 attributes of Ahura Mazda are similar to the 99 names of Allah. For example ‘Al –Karim’ is used in Islam to describe Allah as generous and in Zoroastrianism ‘Khaavar’ is used to describe Ahura Mazda in the same way. • Roda – I learnt about the prophet Zoroaster and how he experienced revelations from Ahura Mazda, which is similar to the way Prophet Muhammad was visited by angel Jibreel in the Cave Hira and they both went onto spread God’s message to his people. • Aidas- I think that Zoroastrianism should be taught to all pupils as it teaches us about the world’s history and how it has inspired and influenced other religions.
