Two comments about imaging closed forms

This paper discusses the imaging of closed forms in seismic data, focusing on the differences and performance of leading-order and high-order imaging series. The results show that the shifted LOIS form is more reasonable and can accurately locate reflectors in 1D medium.

  1. Two comments about imaging closed forms Jingfeng Zhang, Fang Liu, Kris Innanen and Arthur Weglein M-OSRP annual meeting University of Houston May 10th–12th, 2006

  2. Outline • Introduction and Background • Discussions of imaging closed forms • Conclusions and Discussions • Acknowledgments

  3. Introduction Leading-Order Imaging Series: High-Order Imaging Series: 1. What difference it will make if the complicated argument moved to the other side of the equation? What’s the picture here? 2. What is the performance of the HOIS for 1D medium?

  4. Background: History of ISS • ISS free surface multiple removal • Prediction + Subtraction; D*D FSM • ISS internal multiple attenuation and elimination • Prediction + Subtraction; D*D*D IM • Imaging with reference medium velocity • D ; • Nonlinear inversion • D ;

  9. The first point • What difference it will make if the complicated argument moved to the other side of the equation? What’s the picture? • ANS: • (1)The shifted form will make sure deeper events will not help the movement of shallower events. • (2)The distance that will be moved for any interface in will be totally determined by the experience of the event corresponding to that interface; or shallower interfaces and layers. • (3)For small contrast model, the difference between the results for the two forms are neglegible.

  10. A little history • Simon Shaw: LOIS • Kris Innanen: IIS; • A “natural” extension • Fang Liu:

  11. The second point 2. What is the performance of the HOIS for 1D medium?

  12. The second point 2. What is the performance of the HOIS for 1D medium?

  13. Conclusions and Discussions • The shifted LOIS form is more reasonable which makes sure • deeper events will not help the movement of shallower events, or • only shallower events will help the movement of deeper events. • The HOIS closed form can move the first reflector below water bottom to their accurate location for 1D medium. • Further effort is needed to “derive” the shifted form

  14. Acknowledgments • Simon Shaw (ConocoPhillips) are thanked for the helpful discussions. • We thank Sam Kaplan for his help in writing the reports. • M-OSRP sponsors are thanked for their support.
