Announcements The reading for the next quiz is from the Bentley text (ch. 32). The chapter has been uploaded already to the website. Also for Thursday, there will be a Virtual Classroom you need to watch about the Berlin Conference. Check the website and Twitter for the link. There will be questions about the video on the reading quiz.
Discussion Today you will be participating in what is called the Structured Academic Controversy model. It is a means of reaching a consensus. There is no winner or loser. “Japan succeeded in responding to the West whereas China failed. This is because Japan was more unified politically than China.” Each group should split into 2 sub-groups and pick a side of the debate topic. After internal conversation, the first sub-group presents their case to the other sub-group. The second sub-group will summarize the first sub-group’s arguments. Switch roles and repeat step 2. Then the group works on reaching a consensus about which arguments are most valid. If no consensus can be reached, determine where the key differences lie. Each student will write a response essay (~1 page) expounding upon the consensus reached or the key disagreements. This will be your participation grade.
