  2. Rules and Reasons • Balancing is needed because otherwise there is an unequal amount of atoms on each side • Due to the conservation of matter, there has to be an equal number of atoms on both sides of the equation • You can add a coefficient to balance the equation, but not a subscript

  3. Example • Al(s) + CuCl2(aq)  Cu(s) + AlCl3(aq) • 2Al(s) + 3CuCl2(aq)  3Cu(s) + 2AlCl3(aq)
