The 5 P’s of Ethical Power • Purpose: What is my purpose in life? • Pride: Too much or too little pride is dangerous. • Patience: Live by principles knowing that all will work out in the end. Don’t be greedy. • Persistence: Stick to your purpose, even when inconvenient. • Perspective: Focus on the purpose.
Organizational Ethics Check • Three organizational ethics check questions are: • (1) Are we delivering what we promise in terms of quality and customer service? • (2) Are we selling a product or service that is harmful to society? • (3) Are we honest in the way we do business?
Codes of Ethics • A code of ethics sets forth self-enforcing moral and professional guidelines for behavior in a given field.
Organizational Promotion of Ethics • Ethics can be promoted throughout the organization by the security manager serving as a role model. • By having a clear vision statement. • By having a code of ethics. • Prescreening potential employees and having ongoing inservice training can help promote ethical behavior as well.
Ethical Problem Solving • Values and a strong sense of ethics should be the core of the decision-making/problem-solving process.
