1.Tone: Dreamy, mysterious, magical
2.Setting (place): An island in the Mediterranean sea, probably off the coast of Italy.
3.Protagonist: Prospero
4.Major conflict: Prospero, the duke of Milan and a powerful magician, was banished from Italy and thrown to sea by his evil brother, Antonio, and Alonzo, the king of Naples. As the play began, Antonio and Alonzo came under Prospero’s magic power as they sailed past his island.
5.Inner conflict: It was inside Prospero between good and evil as instead of using his magic for revenge, he used it to make these lords repent and restore him to his rightful place.
6.Rising action: Prospero created the tempest, causing his enemies’ ship to wreck and its passengers to be split out on his island.
7.Climax/crisis/turning point: Alonzo and his party stopped to rest, and Prospero caused a banquet to be set out before them. Just as they were about to eat, Ariel appeared in the shape of a huge ugly bird and accused them of their dishonesty and betrayal to Prospero. The banquet vanished in thunder and lightning, and Ariel warned the "three men of sin" of their destiny. Alonzo was overwhelmed with guilt and regret.
8.Falling action/resolution/consequence: Prospero brought Alonzo and the others before him and forgave them. Prospero invited Alonzo and his company to stay the night before everyone returned to Italy the next day, where Prospero would reassume his dukedom. Alonzo realized that his son is alive and promised to marry Prospero's daughter. After Prospero uttered the farewell to his actors, Ariel entered with news of the collapse of the Caliban plot.
9.Themes: • Love, forgiveness, evil, loyalty and gratitude
Love: • Love was shown between Prospero and his daughter, Miranda. She felt that she overloaded her father when they were on the island all by themselves. But Prospero told her that she was a sort of relief to him. • Love was shown between Miranda and Ferdinand. Miranda’s kind heart and support relieved him from his pain as he was grieving the death of his father.
Forgiveness: • Forgiveness was shown when Prospero decided to forgive his brother and King of Naples who conspired together to rob him of his dukedom.
Evil: • Evil was clear when Antonio and the King of Naples conspired together to rob Prospero, Antonio’s brother, of his dukedom because Antonio was greedy and selfish and wanted to be the Duke instead of him. • Evil also was clear when Antonio encouraged Sebastian to kill his brother, King of Naples, so that he could take his throne and become the King.
Loyalty: Gonzalo was so loyal to his master, Prospero. When Antonio and Alonzo forced Prospero and Miranda into a small boat without sails, oars or ropes, Gonzalo secretly put food, clothes and some books of magic that belonged to Prospero inside the boat. If it hadn’t been for Gonzalo, Prospero and Miranda would have died and Prospero wouldn’t be an enchanter.
Gratitude: Gratitude was clear when Ariel promised to serve Prospero for twelve years as Prospero had freed him from the pine tree using his magic.
10.Motifs: Masters and servants, water and drowning, mysterious noises.
