  2. New Connections  Sharing Transatlantic Slave Trade • Started with the Spanish • Continued with each additional nation • Over 10 million African slaves were brought across the Atlantic from 1518 to 1800 while only 2 to 2.5 million Europeans migrated to the New World during this period

New Connections  Sharing The Columbian Exchange (Grand Exchange) • Following years of separation the Old and New World became intertwined once again • Occurred after Columbus’ arrival in the New World • Cultural and biological exchange of ideas & goods • Animal, plant and bacterial life of two world collided • Had lasting effects on the world • Some question if it was an unequal trade • Why?

The Columbian Exchange • New World Was Introduced To: • New diseases  no prior experience/immunity  devastating effects on populations • New weeds and pests • New Livestock and Pests • New Food and Fiber Crops • Old World Was Introduced To: • New Food and Fiber Crops  improved diets & fomented trade • Expanded the scope of production of popular drugs between two worlds • Brought pleasure and consequences • Coffee, sugar and tobacco
