  1. Monte Carlo Validation – Status and Plan May 2006 Tancredi Carli Aim before data taking: Document describing how the Monte Carlo describes the various test-beam data Need: 1) Correct description of detector and beam-line geometry 2) Correct treatment of noise and digitisation 2) Correct reconstruction 3) Correct description of physics processes in G4 or possibly FLUKA For the moment these points can only be obtained from the testbeam  For ATLAS need strategy to validate in situ (DM, crack description etc.)

  2. The document should contain: 1) Comparisons to electrons as precise as possible (large part of detector/beam-line geometry, cross-talk, norm factors) 2) Comparisons to muons, if possible (noise simulation, effects like photostatisic in Tile, overall scale) 3) Comparisons to pions with G4.8 LHEP/QGSP (more recent physics list will be made available by interaction with the G4 people) presently efforts on-going (within LCG) to interface Fluka to G4 With the following observables: Must: 1) Energy distribution in layers, mean energy vs layer total energy distribution 2) Linearity and resolution (needs e/pi, DM correction) If possible: (as they will be used in local hadron calibration) 2) Energies and cluster moments using topological clustering 3) Observables used in dead material/leakage correction 4) Procedure to do e/pi weighting

  3. Recently a lot of effort went into including simulation of old stand-alone • test-beams into ATHENA. • Now: Must also do data analysis ! • Compare MC/Data • Priority: • Finish simulation software using new tools (geo-model etc.) • Complete digitisation and reconstruction • Put Data • Munich: • Where do we stand ? • What is missing ? • Do we have enough man-power ? (test-beam ideal for Phd-students) • Barcelona: • First results… • Sommer 2007: • Document ready ?

  4. 1) HEC standalone: (Kiryunin et al., Fincke-Keeler et al.)  track changes in G4, G4 benchmarking  presently working on G4.8 (for HEC recently improvements of geometry description) to be presented in Barcelona 2) Combined EMEC/HEC (Kiryunin et al., Fincke-Keeler et al.) implementation in ATHENA on-going/finished ? status ? 3) Combined EMEC/HEC/FCAL (2004) (Kiryunin et al., Fincke-Keeler et al.) implementation in ATHENA finished, need to finish software validation 4) EMEC standalone: Marseille result presented 5) Lar-Barrel TB02 electron: -linearity analysis finished (1 permille description of mean energy ) -uniformity on-going (ready within a few months) 6) Tile TB02: projective geometry: Alexa et al., work on-going, Status ? 90 degree: Simonyan: first results this sommer, ready for Barcelona 7) FCAL stand-alone: status unkown

  5. 8) CBTB04: o) Muons: Schlager/Carli first results this summer discussion with G4 people on-going (mu-nucelar interaction missing in present physics lists) o) Electrons 1-245 GeV Carli/Lampl/Paganis + inner detector people expect result this summer,  to be presented in Barcelona o) Pions: 1-300 GeV Speckmayer et al., Dotti et al. first results presented in this workshop move to cold Lar geometry, move to G4.8, test different physics list  result to be presented in LCG meetings with G4 people to be presented in Barcelona o) Photons: Laplace/Koffas work ongoing Need to share work
