  1. The Preterite of Regular AR Verbs The Preterite is one of two past tenses in Spanish. It expresses completed actions in the past. These are some common expressions of time that indicate completed actions: ayer- yesterday anoche- last night anteayer- day before yesterday el mes pasado- last month la semana pasada- last week el año pasado- last year el (day of the week) pasado- last (day of the week) 1. To form the preterite of regular AR Class verbs, you add the correct AR preterite ending to the stem of the infinitive. stem + regular AR preterite ending

  2. 2. The endings: yo- é nosotros- amos tú- aste Uds. ellos,- aron ellas Ud., él, ella- ó Example: Yo corté el césped. Nosotroscortamosel césped. *** Uds., ellos,- cortaron el césped. ellas Tú cortaste el césped. Ud., él, ella cortó el césped *** The “nosotros” form of the verb is the same in Both tenses.

Spelling Changes in the AR Preterite For AR Class verbs in the preterite there are 3 spelling changes that are made in only in the Yo form of the verb! a. verbs ending in CAR: change the c to qu. Then add the é. sacar  saqué Yo saqué la basura anoche b. verbs ending in GAR: change the g to gu. Then add the é. apagar  apagué Yo apagué el incendio. c. verbs ending in ZAR: change the z to c. Then add the é. lanzar  lancé Yo lancé la pelota de béisbol.

  4. 2. To form the preterite of this class of verbs, you add the correct ER/IR preterite ending to the stem of the infinitive. stem + regular preterite ER/IR ending 3. The preterite endings for ER/IR class verbs are: yo- í nosotros(as)- imos tú- iste ustedes- ieron Ud., él, ella- ió ellos(as)- ieron

  5. Example: Escribir (to write) Yo escribí Tú escribiste Ella escribió Nosotros escribimos Ellos escribieron 3. Spelling changes: a. for any verb whose stem ends in a vowel, ió and ieron change to “yó” and “yeron.” Example: leer- to read yo leí tú leíste él leyó nosotros leímos ellos leyeron

  6. 3. The verb DAR (to give) Though the verb dar is an AR class verb, it is conjugated as \an ER/IR verb In the preterite tense. yo di nosotros dimos tú diste ellos dieron él dio
