Enhancing Teaching & Learning in Post-16 Mathematics - Pilot Project Session 1 - 30th November 2006 The Stable – Pondhu House
Starter! Learning Objectives To consolidate knowledge of • Coordinate geometry of straight lines • Coordinate geometry of curves • Definite integration Treasure hunt activity • Solve the problem on your card • Find the card that has the answer • Solve the next problem ….
Context • National and county imperative to raise the proportion of students opting for mathematics post-16 and the subsequent retention; • A need to address the perception of mathematics amongst current and potential students; • To support the learning needs of a broader spectrum of students opting for mathematics post-16.
Aims of the project in Cornwall • To increase the interactivity and engagement of A Level teaching and to promote the highest possible standards of teaching and learning in post-16 mathematics; • To build the capacity to sustain further development; • To develop further materials that extend the approaches across most of the AS and A2 curriculum.
Success Criteria • The styles of teaching and the types of resources and approaches used addresses much more acutely the needs of all learners of mathematics at post-16; • An improvement in the recruitment, retention and achievement of students studying mathematics at post-16 in Cornwall, including among those pupils who would like to study Further Mathematics.
Who’s who? • Lee Northern – Maths Adviser • Nicola Reed – SNS Consultant • Sharon Tripconey – FM Centre Manager • Colin White – AST, Saltash School • Peter Hough – NCETM (Regional Co-ordinator for West Midlands and SW)
Schools/Colleges Involved • Camborne School & Community College • Falmouth School • Liskeard School & Community College • Saltash.net Community School • Sir James Smith Community School • Treviglas Community College • Truro College
Project Team • Camborne Science & Community College– Heather Davis & Christine Lyle • Saltash.net Community School– Colin White & Tatiana Hinds • Falmouth School – Karen Pearce & Joe Anstis • Liskeard School & Community College– Ian Crews & Nicky Hubert • Sir James Smith Community School – Alison Osborne & Heather Vaughan • Treviglas Community College – Matthew Cherry & James Rogers • Truro College – Elaine Williams & Colin Bacon
Project methodology • 30 Nov 06: Session 1 : Launch of project • Showcase’ of resources and ideas and initial support for coaching. • Each institution to receive a ‘Standards Unit box’. • NCETM ‘private community’ established.
Project methodology • Between session 1 and session 2: • Schools and colleges develop, prepare, teach and review lessons and/or sequences of lessons; • Teachers use peer coaching model to support each other with input and additional support as needed by project leaders; • Post resources etc prepared by the group onto NCETM community. Use community as a discussion and ‘sharing’ forum;
Overview 30 November 2006(The Stable - Pondhu) • Rationale and methodology, • Explore materials and approaches • Decide on topic areas for schools/colleges to trial. 7 March 2007 • Review experiences from lessons taught between sessions 1 and 2, • Develop further materials and evaluate progress, both in using the T&L and coaching approaches, • Roll out more widely in participating schools. 21 June 2007 • Continue to develop suite of resources • Review the pilot project and decide on next steps – begin to plan county-wide INSET day (Aut 07)
Programme for the afternoon 13:30 Treasure hunt (NR) 13:40 Introductions & Rationale (LN) 13:55 Standards Units approaches & Collaborative Practice (PH) 14:45 Trios Activity (ST) Using the Jigsaw software (CW) 15:20 ‘Tour’ of Standards unit resources! - ‘Building Houses’ (LN) 15:30 Practical integration (NR) Always/Sometimes/Never & ‘Unjumbling’ (LN) 16:20 Plenary & Finish
Trios Activity • What strategies did you employ to position the cards? • What was your starting point? • What discussions did you have with your partner? • List the mathematical content and skills that arose in the activity
Practical integration Resources • Cardboard box • Scissors • Pencil / ruler • Balance • Important! The axis of your graphs must be the edge of the card
On-line Support We would like to establish on-line support / forum / repository for resources for participants, by using a ‘private community’ on the NCETM website. To set this up, everyone will need to register with the website – once this is done, we will set up the community.
