What do you own currently? • What do you currently use your equipment for? • What camera controls do you currently use?
What have you been photographing recently/in the past? • What kind of things are you wanting to photograph as a result of this course? • Are there any specific skills you would like to learn as a result of this course?
Cameras and light • The camera acts like eye. • The light hits the camera, goes through the lens, when the shutter is open, and then hits the sensor or film to create an image.
Shutter Speed ISO Aperture (F Stop)
Shutter speed • Amount of time the camera is taking a picture for. • The shutter opens to allow light in. • The longer the shutter is open the more light is let in. • Fast shutter speed ‘freezes motion’ but can result in dark or ‘under exposed’ images. • Slow shutter speeds risk blurry photographs but can allow photographers to ‘light up the dark’.
Aperture/F-stop • Aperture is the size of the hole light enters the camera. • It is measure in ‘F-stop’ numbers. • The higher the number the smaller the hole and vice/versa. • A low number (e.g. F5.6) lets in lots of light. And high numbers (e.g. F22) let in much less. • The Aperture also effects how much focus you get in an image. Low numbers give a smaller ‘Plain of focus’ and high numbers give a larger plain of focus.
ISO • ISO is how sensitive the camera is to light. • A high number means highly sensitive. • A low number means not very sensitive. • High ISO numbers create ‘noise’ in an image which manifests as grainy looking quality.
White Balance (WB) • Is the way colour and effects the way the camera interprets colour. • This can be adjusted in 3 main ways. • Automatic • Semi-automatic (presets) • Or manual • White balance is measured in ‘Kelvin’
Cloudy day with little sun • Shutter speed 1/60 • F.11 • ISO 800 • (tripod)
Night • Shutter speed: 30 seconds • Aperture: f/22 • ISO: 100
Sunny Day (good quality light) • Shutter speed: 1/125 • Aperture: F25 • Iso: 250
Shutterspeed- 1/250th • Aperture- F.9 • ISO- 400
Shutter speed: 1/100th • Aperture: F8 • Iso: 800 • Light sources 3
Shutter speed- 8 seconds • Aperture- F.11 • ISO 400
NEXT TIME • Software • Image editing • PLEASE BRING 1 IMAGE OF YOUR OWN FOR DISCUSSION. • This can be taken over the coming week or have been a photo you took in the past.
