Please think and write down what you FEEL towards • Young man using injecting drugs? • Gay man taking drugs anally? • Heavily pregnant woman injecting heroin? • Heavily pregnant woman injecting methamphetamine? • Client of substitution treatment taking stimulants? • Man forcing his women into sex work to buy drugs? • Woman forcing her daughter into sex work to buy drugs? Presentation 7
Target groups of Outreach Work Vulnerable to HIV populations (IDUs, CSWs, MSM, street children) who: • Can be found in the street; • Have special meeting places; • Due to certain conditions are closed for social service providers. • These characteristics pre-define the way BCC strategies are implemented! Presentation 7
Principles of Outreach Work 1. Objective perception of injection drug users (IDUs). • Choice to use drugs by the other person is taken as a fact. • Neither good nor bad • Methods of work assume that a client is not going to stop using drugs. • Drug users are not made quit taking drugs although they can be motivated for this. • Social Worker’s trap: motivation ≠ making ≠ talking into BUT ₌ to understanding when motivation is needed. Presentation 7
Principles of Outreach Work 2. Prevention support of IDUs as a low threshold service. Low threshold criteria: • IDU is provided help even if s/he is under drugs effect. • IDU is offered help for free: counseling, syringe exchange, etc. Presentation 7
Principles of Outreach Work 3. Free will • IDU makes own choices regarding necessary help from outreach worker. 4. Anonymity • IDU provides outreach worker with the personal information s/he finds is necessary. 5. Confidentiality • Keeping in secret different aspects of client’s life with whom an outreach worker is in contact. Presentation 7
Principles of Outreach Work 6. Non - judgmental attitude towards IDUs • is a moral principle of providing help to anyone who needs this help. 7. Being ready to work with any person independently on his/her believes, values in order to minimize possible harms from drug use. • Refer to “FEEL” exercise. Were you judgmental or not? Presentation 7
Using posters from previous exercise think • Where/for which purposes can you apply outreach work, think of groups you did not provide outreach for. • Which methods might help in establishing outreach work for those groups? • What result of outreach work we aim at? Presentation 7
Results of outreach work • Result of outreach work is a client’s behavior change to less risky with consequent change of destructive aims to instructive ones. Presentation 7
Results of outreach work • Active participants of IDUs in planning prevention programme; • Safer drug use; • Responsible behavior towards sexual partners and close environment • Participation on peer education • Planning and implementation of positive changes in life (treatment, seeking for counseling, visiting self-help groups. Presentation 7

This can be reached through • Information– providing IEC • Counseling - qualified help in solving problems. • Providing access to social and medical help. Presentation 7
