  1. Lesson 14 EVALUATION OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS 7, 14/2, 4 + 3, -21/-3, & 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 These expressions are called NUMERICAL EXPRESSIONS or just NUMERALS. 4 + x, 4x, 3x -2, 4/x, & 4x + 2y + 7z When letters as well as numbers are use in an expression, we call the expression an ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION OR MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSION. Because the value assigned to x can be changed or varied, we call the letters VARIABLES or UNKNOWNS. Numbers do NOT change their values. Therefore we call the numbers in an expression CONSTANTS.

  2. Lesson 14 Continued • Find the value of xmp if x = 4, m = 5 & p = 2 • Evaluate: 4yz – 5 if y = 2 & z = 10 • Evaluate: y – z if y = -2 & z = -6 • Evaluate: -a – b – ab if a = -3 & b = -4 • Evaluate: -xa(x – a) + a if a = -2 & X = 4 6. Evaluate: -(m + x)(-a + mx) if m = 2, x = -3 & a = -4
