Lesson 14 EVALUATION OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS 7, 14/2, 4 + 3, -21/-3, & 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 These expressions are called NUMERICAL EXPRESSIONS or just NUMERALS. 4 + x, 4x, 3x -2, 4/x, & 4x + 2y + 7z When letters as well as numbers are use in an expression, we call the expression an ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION OR MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSION. Because the value assigned to x can be changed or varied, we call the letters VARIABLES or UNKNOWNS. Numbers do NOT change their values. Therefore we call the numbers in an expression CONSTANTS.
Lesson 14 Continued • Find the value of xmp if x = 4, m = 5 & p = 2 • Evaluate: 4yz – 5 if y = 2 & z = 10 • Evaluate: y – z if y = -2 & z = -6 • Evaluate: -a – b – ab if a = -3 & b = -4 • Evaluate: -xa(x – a) + a if a = -2 & X = 4 6. Evaluate: -(m + x)(-a + mx) if m = 2, x = -3 & a = -4
