The Gospel – Twitter Style • Ephesians 2:8-9 “Saved by grace, through faith, a gift from God, not by works…” • Attempts at Salvation the Popular Way • Ephesians 2:8,9 • “…not from yourselves … not by works…” • Works
“…not by works, so no one can boast” Ephesians 2:9 • The Pharisees in Jesus’ day believed they were saved and favoured by God because of what they did. They boasted, thumping their chest, saying “God, I thank you that I am not like all other men – robbers, evil doers and adulterers.” Luke 18:11 • God’s righteousness is radical compared to our human works of righteousness.
Romans 3:21, 22, 23 “But now a righteousness from God, apart from the law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” • By comparison humankind is radically sinful in God’s eyes.
Romans 3:10-12 “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” • The entire human race suffers from corruption, rooted in disobedience, both active and possessive. • Even our best works are coloured by sin and can never approach the radical righteousness which our righteous God demands. • No matter how high we climb the moral ladders, it is not high enough.
Salvation is not by works. • Works + Works = No Salvation
2. Salvation God’s Way • “For it is by grace you have been saved…” • What is GRACE? • GRACE = “God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense” • Unmerited favour from God or others. • Undeserved kindness from God or others. • Enabling power given to me even though I do not deserve it. • “Grace is what God does within me, without me” Unknown Source • Grace = How God Saves Us! It is free!
Romans 11:6 “And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.” • Grace + Works = No Salvation • Grace + Faith = God’s Salvation • No grace, no salvation • No faith, no salvation
The Bible says faith/belief is the thing God honours more than any single quality. • Acts 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved you and your household.” • John 1:12 “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” • Acts 13:39 “Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.” • Romans 4:5 “However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.”
What is faith? • “True faith is belief plus trust” Kent Hughes • Do we believe/trust Jesus to be Who He says He is? • Do we believe/trust that He died for our sins? • Do we believe/trust that He was resurrected and lives today? • Do I trust him to save me?
Conclusion: • Salvation is not “by works” • 2. We must believe that salvation is only “by grace” – it is a completely free gift. • Ephesians 2:8-9 “Saved by grace, through faith, a gift from God, not by works…” • We must understand that salvation is through faith/trust. • Acts 16:30 “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
Romans 10: 9,10 “If you (I) confess with your (my) mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your (my) heart that God raised Him from the dead, you (I) will be saved. For it is with your (my) heart that you (I) believe and are (am) justified, and it is with your (my) mouth that you (I) confess and are (am) saved.”
