Waltham, MA INNOVATION High temperature vacuum transfer of alloys for pressure infiltration of ceramic and carbon fiber preforms • ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Successfully cast superalloy composites utilizing vacuum melting and transfer to mold vessel • Developments were applied to the manufacture of copper and aluminum matrix composites for electronic thermal management materials Boeing K-band Module Housings for Spaceway Phased Array Antenna High Temperature Vacuum Transfer (APIC) Facility COMMERCIALIZATION • $1.7M production facility installed and in operation • Formed a joint venture/supply agreement with HC Starck to market MetGrafTMmaterials into the power semiconductor industry, including IGBT modules for hybrid electric vehicles • Owners investment, commercial leases and loans, supply agreement fees and reinvested profits amount to $2M • 24 full-time jobs as a result of the innovation • GOVERNMENT/SCIENCE APPLICATIONS • Will be used for the Boeing SpacewayTMsatellite communication system, launch 2003-2004 Wideband Gapfiller Satellite's Ka-band Antenna • Wideband Gapfiller satellite communication system, launches in 2004-2005 • A wide range of electronic, microwave, power semi-conductor and optical packaging applications are in various stages of production, prototype development, and advanced research Glenn Research Center Materials 3-077 1993 Phase II, NAS3-27541, rev. 5/03 NASA Contact – Michael Nathal Company Contact – J.
