  2. UTOPIA VS. DYSTOPIA • UTOPIA • A place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics, laws, customs, and conditions. • The perfect world.

  4. UTOPIA • DIRECTIONS: Spend the next 7-10 minutes free-writing in your reader’s notebook and creating a “perfect” world 25 years from now. What would it look like? What would people be doing or allowed to do? What technology could people take advantage of (maybe it’s not invented yet). Keep it school appropriate.

  5. UTOPIA VS. DYSTOPIA • DYSTOPIA: • 1. A futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through control of: • Corporations • Bureaucracies, • Technology, • Morals, or • Totalitarian people.

  6. Bureaucracy: • A large group of people who run a government or company and are not elected to do so. They have complicated rules and ways of doing things.

  7. MORALS: • What is right and wrong regarding human behavior.

  8. Totalitarian: • Controlling the people of a country in a very strict way with complete power that cannot be opposed. This is similar to a dictatorship. • EXAMPLES: List one or two examples from history or current day world politics that are examples of a totalitarian government.

  9. DYSTOPIAS • 2. Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst-case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political system.

  10. DYSTOPIAS • • Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society. • PROPAGANDA: • The art of persuasion intended to make us accept things without analyzing them. • Uses emotion and avoids critical thinking.

  11. DYSTOPIA CHARACTERISTICS • • Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted. • • A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of the society. • • Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance.

  12. DYSTOPIA CHARACTERISTICS • Citizens have a fear of the outside world. • Citizens live in a dehumanized state. • The natural world is banished and distrusted

  13. DYSTOPIA CHARACTERISTICS • Citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality and dissent are bad. • The society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world.

  14. TYPES OF DYSTOPIAN CONTROLS • Corporate control: • One or more large corporations control society through products, advertising, and/or the media.

  15. 2. Bureaucratic control: • Society is controlled by a mindless bureaucracy through a tangle of red tape, relentless regulations, and incompetent government officials.

  16. 3. Technological control: • Society is controlled by technology—through computers, robots, and/or scientific means. Examples include The Matrix and The Terminator.

  17. 4. Philosophical/religious control: • Society is controlled by philosophical or religious ideology often enforced through a dictatorship or theocratic government.

  18. DYSTOPIAN PROTAGONIST • often feels trapped and is struggling to escape. • questions the existing social and political systems.

  19. DYSTOPIAN PROTAGONIST • believes or feels that something is terribly wrong with the society in which he or she lives. • helps the audience recognizes the negative aspects of the dystopian world through his or her perspective.
