  2. Introduction • Single phase transformers are designed to accept a single-phase AC current and produce single-phase AC power. • It means the transformer relies on a voltage cycle operating in a particular uniform time phase. • The voltage produced is typically lower or higher depending on the turns-ratio. • In these transformers the energy is transferred between circuits through the principle of electromagnetic induction. www.customcoils.com

  4. Transformer Construction The three main parts of a transformer are: • Primary Winding: The winding that takes electrical power & produces magnetic flux when it is connected to an AC source. • Magnetic Core: This refers to the medium where the magnetic flux produced by the primary winding flows. The flux passes through a low reluctance path linking the primary winding with the secondary winding creating a closed magnetic circuit. • Secondary Winding: The winding that produces the output voltage due to mutual induction in the transformer & is typically connected to an external load. www.customcoils.com

  5. Working Principle • The working principle of the single phase transformer is based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. Basically, mutual induction between two or more windings is responsible for transformation of energy in an electrical transformer. Faraday’s Laws of Electromagnetic Induction • According to Faraday’s law, “Rate of change of flux linkage with respect to time is directly proportional to the induced EMF in a conductor or coil” www.customcoils.com

  6. Basic Transformer Theory • The principal operation of a transformer: • As soon as the primary winding is connected to a single–phase AC supply, an AC current starts flowing through it. • A subsequent alternating flux is induced in the core by the alternating current in the primary winding. • The alternating flux links with the secondary winding through the core. • Now, according to Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction this varying flux will induce a voltage in the secondary winding. www.customcoils.com
