The Trail of Tears was a removal of Native Americans. The tribes that were east of the Mississippi River were forced to move to west or destroyed in battle.
The Cherokee tried to hold onto their land by fighting. Instead of fighting with bows and arrows, they fought with a printing press and a government.
Later the state tried to silence Christian missionaries who were teaching about Christ in the Cherokee Nation. The event eventually lead to the Supreme Court as Worcester versus Georgia. Then the Supreme Court resolved the problem with a treaty.
The treaty was called Treaty of New Echota. It obligated voluntary elimination by 1838 for the barter of five million dollars.
In May of 1838 the Cherokee Nation was forced to move into filthy forts by the federal and state troops for a while. John Ross noticed that there were many deaths and asked General Winfield Scott if he could move the parties himself to the west. He was given the request.
Later John Ross’s suggestion to move worked. The death amount was reduced, and the Cherokee Nation arrived at their new homes in 1839.
