  1. What are the British doing? • British cut the Trans-Atlantic cable • Done so any information coming from Germany to the U.S. would have to go through Britain. • Britain could feed us wrong information

  2. German Submarine Warfare • U-Boat- unterseeboot- or submarine is undetectable • issued no warnings • U.S. considers this uncivilized • yet we still remain neutral

  3. Why did Britain do it? • Done to encourage anti-German feeling in the U.S. • Get us on the side of the allies. • We could turn the tide of the war by finally entering into it.

  4. The U.S. and President Wilson • Germany sinks passenger liners • We stick with preparing for war • but our neutrality is weakening

  5. Sussex pledge • German U-Boats will warn ships before attacking them • Germany does not want us in the war, and does this to make the U.S. happy • How long will it last?

  6. Propaganda begins • When the Luisitania is sunk. Europeans unite in anger against Germany and Austria-Hungary. • The Luisitania was a passenger liner sunk off the coast of Ireland

  7. What is Propaganda? • publicity to promote something: information or publicity put out by an organization or government to spread and promote a policy, idea, doctrine, or cause

  10. U.S. Propaganda • Our propaganda was used to create support for the war effort • Raise money for the troops- Liberty bonds

February 1917 • Germany breaks the Sussex pledge • U.S. says, “German submarine warfare has gone to far.” • Wilson wants to arm our merchant ships and protect our trade. • Some feel this will bring us into the war. • To avoid war, anti-war senators filibuster- or refuse to stop talking on the Senate floor to prevent a vote. • No war for us , yet.

  12. Then the Zimmerman Note is uncovered

  13. What is the Zimmerman Note? • A letter from Germany to Mexico, encouraging Mexico to join the war on their side. • U.S. does not like this at all • Why?

  14. Why did this get our attention? • We feel safe with oceans between us and the fighting. • But Mexico shares a border with us • We cannot have an enemy this close!!!!

  15. And another important event is happening on the other side of the world. • Will this finally draw us into the war?

  16. The Russian Revolution • Russian troops are leaving to help with the revolution at home. • Czar Nicholas II abdicates • the monarchy is replaced with a republican government • we like this government and feel we could ally ourselves with Russia now.

  17. What happens next? • The Germans sink 3 American ships • We have finally had enough! • March 1917, Congress votes for war • April 6, 1917 President Wilson signs the war resolution.
