However, their immunogenicity and fragile structures can significantly limit their effectiveness and efficiency in many of these applications. Thus, it is highly desirable to seek alternative bio-nanostructures, which can mimic antibody’s function but have better functionalities. • Our research is aimed at synthesizing and characterizing novel hybrid nanobiomaterials with nucleic acid aptamers and dendrimer-like star polymers. This research will deliver effective “artificial antibodies” with improved properties. This knowledge can help us to design future nanobiomaterials with superior functions and expand their applications in many fields such as cancer imaging or therapy. • Peer-reviewed papers acknowledging this award: • Zhou J, Soontornworajit B, Martin J, Sullenger BA, Gilboa E, Wang Y. 2. Multivalent “Artificial Antibody” Based on RNA/Dendrimer-Like Star Polymer Hybrid Nanomaterials Yong Wang, University of Connecticut, DMR 0705716 The research is closely integrated into diverse educational activities: ☺ Students at different levels, including graduates, undergraduates, and high school students have participated in every aspect of the proposed research; ☺ Concepts of novel nanobiomaterials and nanomedicines have been introduced in Drug Delivery and Polymeric Materials; ☺ High school teachers and students have been educated through outreach programs including da Vinci Project, E2K Program, and UConn Mentor Connection, Upward Bound /ConnCAP Program. Based on the training, the participating K-12 students have acquired hands-on nanobiotechnology research experience and a better understanding of the nature of biomaterials and bioengineering. Pictures of high school students receiving the training of synthesizing and characterizing nanoconjugates and nanostructured hydrogels.
