History There is no well documented history of Roman Numerals. The Romans based the symbols on a hand. -I being and outstretched finger, -V being a whole hand, and -X being two hands. Besides the concept of zero, the roman numerical system was very similar to ours. Many numerical terms have a basis in Latin.
Why They Are Still Used There are two main reasons why Roman Numerals are still used today. The first is that Roman Numerals are very easily added and subtracted. The second reason is that Arabic Numerals can be mistaken for another number. For example, a zero could look the a six, eight, or nine. 0-6-8-9
