  2. Goals • Understand how UW utilizes multifaceted approaches to address alcohol use/abuse • Identify strategies that can be implemented on your campus as well as roadblocks

  3. Alcohol Survey • Campus Labs as survey administrator • Use iPods touch • RL&DS owns 25 iPods • Results are available instantly if technology works • Illustrates survey options and concepts

UW Alcohol Education Credentials • Two-time winner of NASPA Silver Award • Recognized by Outside the Classroom and United Educator - $20,000 award • Overall (10 year) decrease in drinking rates and positive results from interventions • Local court recognition of interventions • Local/state support • AWARE program/office (1 professional, 4 GAs)

UW and National Drinking Rates • National College Health Assessment every two years since 2001 (random students, aggregate data) • Abstain from alcohol • UW – 18.1% in 2001, 21% in 2009, 15.1% in 2011 • National – 18.3% in 2009 • Binge drinking over past two weeks • UW – 45.7% in 2001, 36.2% in 2009, 36.6% in 2011 • National – 36.6% in 2009

  10. Alcohol Education at UW • Harm reduction/zero tolerance approach • Heavy emphasis on freshmen • Education starts before 1st day of classes • Collaborations between many different offices/departments

  11. Alcohol Education at Orientation • Specific sessions for both parents and students • DOS • RL&DS • UWPD • AWARE • Alcohol EDU requirement • 3 hour online module that has 2 parts • Failure to complete BOTH parts results in registration bump

Alcohol Education First 6 Weeks • Alcohol policies/procedures explained during floor meetings • Substance free halls • Call UWPD for any alcohol case in freshmen hall, including consumption • UWPD cites most cases • Bulletin Boards • Same board on every floor – week 2 • First 6 Weeks programming

RL&DS First 6 Weeks Programs • RL&DS Alcohol GA puts on programs for every floor in every building • Specific learning objectives based on prior assessments • Calculate BAC • Standard size drink • Signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning and what to do • Common laws and fines • Cowboy Choices (peer educators) help with programs • BAC cards with alcohol poisoning on the other side • Party Smart poster • Assessment of learning outcomes

Ongoing Alcohol Education • Alcohol EDU Part II • SafeRide • More than 250,000 rides at 10th birthday (Feb ‘11) • ASUW and WyoTech sponsored program • Thursday – Saturday, 7pm – 2am • Office location downtown • Utilizes “Sidekicks” – RSO fundraiser and community service • T-Shirts and signs for local bars • Alcohol Skills Training – faculty requested presentation • TiPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) • RL&DS Social Norming campaign

  15. RL&DS Social Norming • Survey done in beginning of Fall • Paper or electronic • Start of campaign in late Fall, big kick off in January • Bridge the gap between perceptions of alcohol use/abuse and reality • Multiple faceted campaign

  21. Alcohol Education Assessment • Pre and post done in August and April • Heavy use of technology • Campus Labs • Easy to administer and analyze • Standard questions – multiple years of data • “Fishing questions” – idea that needs to be explored • Important part of program and planning!!!

  31. RL&DS “Standard” Sanctions • Underage Consumption – 1st offense • AWARE • Alcohol paper • Discipline warning • Deferred parental notification • Alcohol recidivism • Relatively low • Current year 103 cases with 4 repeaters • Last year 157 cases with 14 repeaters

  32. UW Alcohol “Interventions” • DUI – must meet with DOS • AWARE (Alcohol Wellness Alternatives, Research, & Education) • Housed in University Counseling Center • 1 full-time professional, 4 GAs (1 RL&DS) • Customized intervention for alcohol and marijuana

  33. AWARE • “Standard” sanction for any alcohol violation in RL&DS • Residents go to RL&DS AWARE GA • Harm reduction focus • Agreement with local courts – reduce most tickets by $100 • Referral numbers

  34. AWARE Process • Student is referred (UW, court, self) • Student goes to AWARE office • Pays $20 deposit • Sets up 1 on 1 screening interview • E-mailed survey to complete before screening • Student completes online survey (30 minutes)

AWARE Process • One on one screening with AWARE educator • Discuss referral event, alcohol history, baseline survey, and harm reduction techniques • Use Motivational Interviewing techniques and Stages of Change framework • Assign additional intervention based on student • AES (Alcohol Education Seminar) – 3 hour class offered monthly • Alcohol EDU or Delayed Alcohol EDU • BASICS – more advanced program

  36. AWARE Process • Student completes intervention • Follow up survey at 30 and 60 days post intervention • Referral agent is notified of AWARE completion • Student gets $20 deposit back • Entire process may take up to 120 days, depending on schedules

AWARE Assessment • Initial screening, 30 day, and 60 day follow ups used • Some interventions randomly assigned for research purposes • Brief highlights 492 students from ‘02 & ‘08 • Reduced frequency of drinking from 3.07 to 2.83 days/month • Reduced drinks consumed from 4.59 to 3.64 • Increase in usage of harm reduction strategies • Small changes between interventions

Community Collaborations • A-TEAM • “Campus-community coalition that works to develop best practices in policy, prevention and intervention, and enforcement to reduce underage drinking and excessive alcohol use.” • Members include: • AWARE, RL&DS, DOS, Greek Life, Faculty, Student Health Services, ASUW, UWPD, Admissions, RHA, Campus Activities, WyoTech, LPD, City Attorney, COPSA

  42. A-Team • Started in 2002 • Coordinated by AWARE • Monthly meeting – lunch provided • University/community clearing house for alcohol related concerns/questions

  43. Closing Activity • Think of things we talked about today and make three lists • Implement with no roadblocks • Implement with few roadblocks and what are those roadblocks • Implement with many roadblocks and what are those roadblocks • Keep in mind the biggest impact for your effort

  44. Big Picture • Alcohol education should be incorporated into a wide variety of campus entities • Alcohol education should start early and continue through the entire college career • Policies and protocols should reflect the institution’s values and dedication

  45. Big Picture • Need to do assessment of alcohol educational efforts • Assessment will provide insight into best practices and future efforts • Need to involve others and community • Need to figure out what will work for your campus
