April 27 – May 3 2008 Andy Walton’sWeekly World Watch “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” Ezekiel 33:6

  2. What is this world watch all about? I decided each week to look at key events that had happened in that week and look at them with the Bible in hand. I hope to build up a picture of Gods hand working in the affairs of this world bringing about that day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle which will be brought to end when the Lord Jesus Christ physically returns from heaven to set up Gods kingdom. The key areas which will crop up time and again will be • Israel – Middle East the growing conflict • Europe – the developing union / political and religious • Russia – continued turning back to anti west ways • The development of King of South – US & UK • Declining moral standards and increasing violence.   3. Weekly Developments These are just a few of the events that have caught my eye in the previous week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Bible viewpoint. Headlines These are always headlines printed in the newspaper – the date is always given and which paper. Normally the Daily Telegraph. (DT) Event This is usually the newspapers take on the events that have happened. It will always be a direct quote from the newspaper. Comment This is my take on why it is interesting from a Bible point of view. The idea of this weekly world watch is to give a quick Biblical perspective without going into detail. If more detail is needed please email me. Bible Quote This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context.

Soviet Parade Revival Headline Tanks Rockets Roll Across Red Square in Soviet Parade Revival Headline Bloomberg April 24 2008 Event More than 100 tanks, rocket launchers and armoured vehicles, flanked by 8,000 soldiers, rattled across the tarmac, while sorties of jet fighters ripped through the sky as army generals saluted below. The display wasn't in communist North Korea or China. It was a practice for a May 9 parade of Russian military hardware on Moscow's Red Square, the first since the Soviet era. The rehearsal on April 22 took place at Alabino, 31 miles west of Moscow, on an overcast morning and accompanied by a recording of Kremlin chimes. ``When you are dealing with other countries, you should not look weak,'' says Konstantin Fedotov, 82, a retired colonel who took part in the first parade in June 1945 and is one of about 20 veterans watching the rehearsal. ``We have to show that we are not toothless and can react to events against us now.'' Comment According to Yevgeny Volk, a Moscow-based analyst for the Heritage Foundation, a U.S. research group the display helps the government to justify defence spending as 20 percent of Russians struggle below the poverty line, ``This is a signal to the West that Russia is restoring its military might,'' says Volk. ``There is also a psychological factor, nostalgia among the current elite for Soviet times. It resembles a return to the old days.'' What Mr Volk does not realise is that he is actually quoting from Bible prophecy. God says in the verse below that he will turn Russia back and then bring them down into Israel. The nation of Russia has been “turned back”. It has “returned to the old days” to quote Mr Volk. It is “restoring its military might” to quote him again. The parade will be held for real on May 9th. Two days after Medvedev takes power! Nato warns Russia over Georgia Headline Nato warns Russia as Georgia tension rises Headline The Daily Telegraph May 1 2008 Event Nato warned Russia on Wednesday that it was "escalating tension" and threatening a Western ally by increasing the number of troops in two breakaway regions of Georgia. Tensions in the region rose last week after a Russian MiG-29 shot down a Georgian spy plane over Abkhazia. Russia denied involvement. "Any attempt by the Georgian side to resolve the conflicts with force against Russian peacekeepers and also against Russian citizens will be met with an adequate and tough answer," the Russian defence ministry said. Comment When Kosovo declared itself to be an independent nation in February, Russia made several warnings that this act would have “consequences”. One of the consequences it mentioned was that other territories that wanted independence would then want to declare they were also new nations. Georgia has two such territories that want to break away. Abkhazia and South Ossetia. (See map above). Since the independence of Kosovo, Russia has begun to stoke up the tensions with Georgia by encouraging and arming these regions. Russia said on Thursday an extra contingent of its troops had begun arriving in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia, a move Tbilisi said was an illegal act of military aggression. Russia announced this week it was deploying hundreds of additional peacekeeping troops to the tiny sliver of land of the Black Sea to counter what it said were Georgian plans for an attack on Moscow-backed separatists in the region. The whole area of Georgia is significant as it is the territory through which Russia will descend on its way to Israel. We could be watching the opening moves of the final conflict. The verse below speaks of an a northern nation being stirred up… Bible Quote Jeremiah 6 22 This is what the LORD says: "Look, an army is coming from the land of the north; a great nation is being stirred up from the ends of the earth.”

'Hamas planning huge holiday attack’ Headline 'Hamas planning huge holiday attack’ Headline Jerusalem Post April 30 2008 Event Hamas will do everything it can to spoil Israel's 60th birthday bash next week with a high-profile terror attack, OC Military Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin told the cabinet on Tuesday. Yadlin said intelligence information indicated that Hamas would try to carry out a large-scale operation, similar to the one it failed to pull off on the eve of Pessah at southern Gaza's Kerem Shalom crossing two weeks ago. During that attack - which included heavy gunfire, mortar shell barrages and two car bombs - 13 IDF soldiers were wounded, and four terrorists were killed. Comment We fast approach a very significant anniversary. The 60th birthday of the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. At midnight on May 14, 1948, the Provisional Government of Israel proclaimed the new State of Israel. In Israel however they do not follow the Gregorian calendar. To them the “date of birth” of the State of Israel is in fact 5th Iyyar. This is Israel’s Independence Day. That was the date on THEIR calendar that Israel was recreated. This year the 5th Iyyar falls on Saturday 10th May. From that date and for several weeks after many celebrations are to occur in Israel and around the world. These celebrations are tempered with the fear of terrorism. Israeli military intelligence (as quoted above) is warning of high profile attacks on Israel during this time. We can be certain that these celebrations of Israel’s existence will madden Israel’s enemies. Over recent years there have been calls for Israel to be “wiped off the map” by Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah. The verse below in Psalm 83 speaks of Israel’s enemies wanting to destroy the nation so that it is no longer remembered. They may use the forthcoming celebrations as an excuse to do just that. Bible Quote Psalm 83 4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

Headline Israel will not accept a nuclear-armed Iran Headline Debkafile May 1 2008 Event The Israeli transport minister Shaul Mofaz, speaking at Yale University Tuesday night, April 30, on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, warned Iran may attain command of enrichment technology before the end of this year. He said: “Israel will not tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran. This time, the Jewish people won’t let it happen. I would like to believe the world will not let it happen. To prevent this, all means are legitimate.” Israel’s annual Holocaust remembrance ceremonies focused this year on the theme of courage displayed by Warsaw Ghetto Uprising leaders 65 years ago, knowing they were doomed. Israeli’s president and prime minister laid wreaths in their honour at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Institute in Jerusalem. Comment The rhetoric against Iran has really picked up in recent weeks. Both Israel and America have put Iran back in their sights. There was a report in the US last year that suggested Iran was not trying to build a nuclear weapon. It appears now though that neither the Israeli nor the American governments actually believe this. Note that the Israeli minister talks of “all means” being legitimate in stopping Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. He says Israel will not let it happen. America said it had despatched a second aircraft carrier group to the Gulf on Wednesday, as the State Department branded Iran the world's "most active" state sponsor of terrorism. Robert Gates, the defence secretary, said the deployment of two aircraft carrier battle groups in the Gulf was a "reminder" to Tehran of US determination to defend its interests in the region. A showdown with Iran may be approaching. God has stirred up the spirit of the Medes (Iranians) at this time in preparation for the final war over Israel.   9. Headline Israeli PM questioned by police Headline BBConline May 2 2008 Event Police investigators in Israel have been questioning the Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, under caution. The police have refused to disclose the reasons for the questioning, but Mr Olmert is already the subject of investigations into alleged corruption. Mr Olmert's office said he would co-operate fully with investigators and was sure the allegations against him would be found to be false. The prime minister has strongly denied any wrongdoing. Comment Israel is facing a corruption epidemic one report said recently. Here we have the Prime Minister questioned under caution by police. Is it any surprise that at the time of the end, shortly before Israel is subdued by the nations that we see corruption in the highest places in Israel. Let us not forget that God himself brings the nations against Israel. Why? Read the verse below and it explains! When God wanted his people to return to the land of Israel, He raised up a Persian king called Cyrus to do this. Cyrus helped the Jews to return and rebuild their temple in Jerusalem. See 2 Chronicles 36:22. It was God who stirred up the spirit of Cyrus to do this! Now we see God wanting his people to recognise their guilt. So this time he raises up another Persian king. This time he has stirred up the Iranian leader not to help the Jews but to want to destroy them. Also it is God himself who puts hooks in the jaws of Russia to pull them down to Israel. God knows that it will take this to make Israel realise the folly of their ways. Finally when Christ returns to save the remnant left they will look on him and finally accept him. Headline Living in Fear and Paying a High Cost in Heart Risk Headline Herald Tribune January 15 2008 Event Worrying about terrorism could be taking a toll on the hearts of millions of Americans. The evidence, published last week in the Archives of General Psychiatry, comes from researchers who began tracking the health of a representative sample of more than 2,700 Americans before September 2001. After the attacks of Sept. 11, the scientists monitored people’s fears of terrorism over the next several years and found that the most fearful people were three to five times more likely than the rest to receive diagnoses of new cardiovascular ailments. Comment This report was in the Herald Tribune a few months ago but I thought it worth including in this weeks WWW. It links together increasing fear with increasing heart problems. They looked at pre and post 9/11 to see what effect it may have had. Though the chances of the average person dying in America at the hands of international terrorists is comparable to the risk of dying from eating peanuts, being struck by an asteroid or drowning in a toilet, fear has increased. Some of the fear is generated by the government warning of imminent terrorist attacks and raising the threat level. “It’s amazing how enduring these feelings of fear are, but look at what’s been going on,” said Alison Holman, a professor of nursing science at the University of California, Irvine, the lead author of the study. The researchers are confident they’ve identified a worrisome link between fear and an increase in heart disease. This report is interesting because it sums up Christ’s words below almost to the letter. Men’s hearts are failing them for fear – therefore our redemption draws near….
