Laptop User Charter Prior to receiving a laptop students must return a signed agreement. This agreement includes: • a commitment to take the laptop home and charge the battery • acceptable computer and internet use including cyber bullying. Failure to comply with the Laptop User Charter could result in: • Recall of the laptop • Loss of access for home use
Laptop User Charter What happens if my laptop breaks? • All laptops and batteries are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. • The warranty covers manufacturer’s defects and normal use of the laptop. • This does not cover negligence, abuse or malicious damage. What happens if I accidentally damage my laptop? In the case of loss or accidental damage a statutory declaration signed by a Justice of the Peace must be provided before a laptop can be replaced.
What happens if my laptop is stolen? Hack-resistant hardware has been included to track and render stolen laptops useless. The technology removes any incentive to steal the devices. Thieves can be tracked and prosecuted. In the case of suspected theft a police event number must be provided before a laptop can be replaced. Fraudulent or excessive claims could lead to loss of access to a laptop for home use.
Will students be taught how to care for their laptops? Students will receive guidance on good laptop care – this includes ergonomics and safe charging. Students will be encouraged to: • Keep the laptop safe. • Take care when using and charging. Laptops should not be placed on or under soft items such as pillows, lounge chairs or blankets as this may cause the laptop to overheat and could result in damage. • Keep the laptop inside school bags when travelling to and from school.
What happens if a family does not have internet access at home? The laptop will have many uses at home without the internet but the students’ ability to gain full benefit from the laptop will be much greater if they have internet access at home. Access will be via the home internet service provider either wired by Ethernet or a wireless access point. DET filters apply when students go online at home via the DET portal.
