NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN COLLEGE (NCWC) • Founded in 1956. • Opened 1960. • President: James A. Gray III • Character: A four-year, coeducational, liberal arts college associated with The United Methodist Church • Location: Main Campus: Rocky Mount, NC. Adult Degree: Triangle, Goldsboro and Rocky Mount.
NCWC • 2010-2011 Enrollment: 780 students on Rocky Mount Campus in the traditional program. • 74 students, 10% of traditional students, are international students from Africa, Europe, South America and Asia. • Over 90% of our international students are athletes.
INTERNATIONALIZING THE CAMPUS • There are many ways of internationalizing college campuses. • Athletics • Study Abroad/Exchange programs • Global courses • Social justice programs • Professional exchange programs
INTERNATIONALIZING WESLEYAN • Athletics: Most of our international students (over 90%) are athletes. They come to Wesleyan seeking an academic, culturally diverse experience along with the athletic experience. • Tennis and soccer are the most popular athletic programs for international students at Wesleyan College.
ACADEMIC ADVANTAGES OF INTERNATIONALIZING THE CAMPUS • Development of a global perspective amongst domestic students. • Acquisition of expertise to solve real world problems. • Development of critical thinking. • Awareness of the student as an individual in the world. • Foreign language acquisition.
ECONOMIC IMPACT OF INTERNATIONALIZATION • 2009-2010 NAFSA report estimates that foreign students and their dependents contribute approximately $18.78 billion to the U.S. economy (NAFSA Report). • NORTH CAROLINA • TOTAL NUMBER OF FOREIGN STUDENTS: 12,307

Conclusion • Internationalization of the campus brings diversity and multiculturalism. • There are problems to overcome: • 1. Student retention. • 2. ELL support. • 3. How to recruit more students.
