UI4.3: What’s in it for u? Jeff Butera, Hampshire College
Outline • Why move to UI4.3? • End user perspective • IT perspective • How to transition? • Questions?
Why ui4.3? • Did you install UI4.0 or UI4.1? • Did you convert to UI4.2? • Did you run WebUI (3.x)? • Do you still have Desktop (2.3)? Same answer: Install UI4.3 – NOW!
Why ui4.3 • Dump WebUI 3.x - bizarre • Dump UI 4.0, 4.1 – architecture • Skip UI4.2 – same with bug fixes • UI 4.3 is 100% SilverLight, no wIntegrate
End user perspective • UI4.3 requires SilverLight plugin • 100% web application • No software to install/maintain on PC • Does NOT behave like traditional web forms with GET/POST
Ui4.3 Summary for end users • Person Lookup before form can be disabled • UI4.x introduced Person lookup before form • UI4.3 can be made to work like Desktop 2.3
IT Perspective • Users no longer have client on PC (yippie) • UI 4.3 authenticates users like WA – via DMI • Users no longer need OS login on APP server • UI4.3 uses new listener for file xfers • APP server no longer needs FTP enabled
It perspective • Security class can disable Excel export for PERSON lookups • Can limit number of connections per user and/or environment • Can send broadcast message to all users logged in • Can setup admin users with no login limits
It perspective • Requires Windows server with IIS • SilverLight talks to IIS, web service talks to Colleague • Some tinkering to get performance right may be required.
It perspective – windows server • MMC console used to control web services • DMI listener • File xfer limit • Web service URL • ISS Manager used to control web sites • Setup SSL • Setup # worker processes (like WA)
transition • Tutorial video included • Works for most knowledgeable users • Not good for users who don’t use PERSON-centric forms (GL, CRSE, etc)
transition • Installed UI4.3 in test • Made all users come to training • Showed video in groups • Allowed all users to login and play • Get people out of their office!
TRANSITION • End users MUST try it out • If they say “whatever” – they’ll be back with questions later • Most people, given time to play, love it.
