  3. First Secretary of State • Thomas Jefferson • Handles relationships with foreign governments

  4. First Treasurer • Alexander Hamilton • Handles the nation’s money • Hamilton came up with the idea of a national bank

  5. First Secretary of War • Henry Knox • In charge of the U.S. army and navy

  6. First Attorney General • Edmund Randolph • Main legal advisor of U.S. government

  7. Judiciary Act • Put into effect on September 24, 1789 • Established the U.S. court system and the judicial branch

  8. First Rebellion • Whiskey Rebellion • 1791 • Rebellion over new taxes put in place by Hamilton • Ended by 13,000 militia soldiers sent by President Washington

  9. First Conflict Between Cabinet Members • Hamilton vs. Jefferson • Hamilton wanted to create a national bank and new taxes to help the U.S. pay off its debt • Jefferson opposed it because the ability to do that wasn’t in the Constitution • Hamilton won • Jefferson was so against it he resigned after Hamilton’s plan was approved
