  1. Fail-Safe Braking Lenze’s Spring-Operated Solutions

  2. Lenze Selection’s electromagnetically operated couplings and brakes are utilised to start, stop, position, and secure moving masses in place. Lenze Selection’s couplings and brakes stand out for their dependability and ease of installation and assembly. • Lenze electrically or electromagnetically switchable clutches and brakes: • Spring-applied brakes. • Tooth clutches and toothed brakes • Magnetic clutches and brakes • Clutch/brake combination • Pole-face friction couplings • Operational Principles Switchable couplings and brakes differ in terms of two fundamental operating principles.

  3. Quiescent Current Or De-Energised Spring pressure generates braking torque (for emergency stops). When DC electricity is provided, the electromagnet disengages the brake and the braking torque is deactivated. Spring-applied or spring-operated brakes, as well as teeth brakes, function on the “power to release” concept. Power-release brakes with a spring are utilised as fail-safe brakes. • Working Current Braking torque is created by the application of DC current. When the electricity is turned off, the brake torque is no longer applied. When the coupler and/or brake are properly dimensioned, they work trouble-free and with excellent operational dependability. Electromagnetic clutches and brakes, pole-face friction couplings, and tooth clutches operate on a “power to engage” basis.

  4. Lifts, hoists, forklifts, and cranes require products that function on a torque created at zero current, i.e. “power to release”. Products based on a working current, such as electromagnetic clutches (also known as electromagnetic couplings), are mostly utilised in automation. Above all, spring-applied brakes are receiving more attention as fail-safe and holding brakes. This is owing to increased safety standards and statutory regulations.Lenze Brake Selection couplings and brakes are available in either dry or oil-operating variants. Depending on the size, the electromagnetic clutch and brake can be fitted in a flange- or shaft-mounted configuration. A suitable mounting surface is required for a flange-mounted structure. For shaft-mounted electromagnetic couplings and brakes, the stator must be fastened to prevent rotation but should not be tensioned rigidly. Electromagnetic couplings and brakes are powered by DC.

  5. Application Area / Utilisation • Conveyor systems and material handling technologies • Machine tools • Cranes • Hoisting applications • Automation technology • Mechanical Engineering Switchable couplings and brakes, such as tooth clutches and spring-operated brakes, are ideal for applications requiring high torques and quick switching times. Extremely strict safety measures are necessary. Extreme circumstances (pole-face friction coupling) prevail. Lenze Brake Selection provides a scalable modular system for switchable and electromagnetically operated couplings and brakes, enabling for the development of an ideal solution for any application.
