  2. RELEASES FROM MUELA TO CALEDON Lesotho can use the yield of Podihali Dam to generate power as it comes available. Provides for environmental flows in the Caledon / Mohakare. Can supplement supply to Maseru. Provides dilution for the Sulphate and Chloride pollution from Maseru’s clothing manufacturers.

  3. ENVIRONMENTAL FLOWS FOR THE MOUTH Increased flows in the lower Orange will address salinity increases. Will improve environmental quality in the estuary and river. The effects of Vioolsdrift Dam on salinity would have to be investigated. Vioolsdrift is likely to experience algal blooms, but downstream blooms could be reduced.

  4. ENVIRONMENTAL FLOWS FOR LOWER VAAL AND LOWER RIET Will reduce salinity in both rivers. Will improve environmental quality in both rivers. Could be provided out of Vaal and /or Orange Systems. Will have to investigate impact on middle Orange.

  5. REDUCED NUTRIENT LOADS TO THE MIDDLE VAAL RIVER Will improve environmental quality. Will address increasing phosphate concentrations Will reduce algal blooms and treatment costs. Must investigate the impact of treatment and reuse of the AMD, and hence reduced dilution from Vaal Dam.
