  1. Sputnik, Satellite and Remote Sensing:A Bibliometric Analysis of the Scientific Publications, 1900-2006 Dr. Ahat A. Nabiullin, ahatnabi@poi.dvo.ru Laboratory of Scientific Information V.I. Il’ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute Bibliometric analysis of the scientific papers published in ISI-covered journals from 1900 to 2006 is performed. Sputnik, satellite, photogrammetry, and remote sensing were used as keywords to search titles, abstracts, and keywords of the scientific literature. Katsushika Hokusai The Great Wave Off Kanagawa Advances of Satellite Oceanography: Understanding and Monitoring of Asian Marginal Seas The International Conference 3-6 October, 2007, Vladivostok, Russia

  2. Preamble The famous physicist and Nobel Prize winner in chemistry Ernest Rutherford said:"Physics is the only real science. The rest are just stamp collecting.“ So in this report I’d like to show you, physicists and remote sensing experts, my stamp collection on Sputnik Age and remote sensing… Advances of Satellite Oceanography: Understanding and Monitoring of Asian Marginal Seas 3-6 October, 2007, Vladivostok, Russia

  3. Problem Statement Can we measure the science? The correct answer is -- YES! And how can we measure the science?

  4. We may count inputs in the science: ■People involved;■University funds;■ Grantssupported the research, etc. We may count the scientific outputs: ■Papers published;■Journals issued;■Books and monographs published;■Conferences held;■Patents, reports, etc.

  5. We used The Science Citation Index(Thomson-ISI, USA) = Web of Science ■Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded)1900-present (more then 6000 journals);■Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)1956-present(more then 2000 jopurnals);■Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) 1975-present(less then 2000 journals) ■Journal Citation Report, 2005 URL: http://isiknowledge.com

  6. The Recent Sputnik Papers Russian Life; Sep/Oct 2007 New York Times. Sep 25, 2007 Philadelphia Inquirer. Sep 22, 2007 USA TODAY. Sep 26, 2007

  7. The growth of Sputnik Papers The start of the Sputnik Age

  8. Subjects of Sputnik Papers,1975-2006

  9. The growth of Satellite Papers Satellite Papers Sputnik Papers

  10. The growth of Phogrammetryand Remote Sensing Papers Papers in Earth Sciences(GeoRef Database) Remote Sensing Papers Photogrammetry Papers

  11. Shares of remote sensing papers by some disciplines in 1975-2005.

  12. Growth of remote sensing journals in 1900-2006 Data from the Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory, 2006. Journals in Earth Sciences Remote Sensing Journals

  13. Table 1. Remote sensing journals.ISI Journal Citation Report, 2005.

  14. Conclusions: ■The bibliometric analysis of remote sensing literature shows that this science is still young with growth rate exceeding that of other Earth sciences. ■Some applications of remote sensing (e.g., in ecology and environmental studies) show even greater figures. ■The results obtained show the number of papers to be published on remote sensing worldwide will double in the next 5-6 years. Is remote sensing community ready to deal with more than 3500 papers per year?

  15. We need close cooperation between Epilogue: ■Engineering & Technology■Hard Science (RS, Oceanography, Geophysics, Biology, etc.■Soft Science (Sociology, History of Science, Library Science, and Scientometrics)
