Mongolia • Genghuis Khan • Built the largest contiguous land empire in history • Gobi desert in the south, cold mountains in the north • Music influenced by nature, nomadism and religion • Festivals • Mostly celebrations of Mongolian culture. • Naadam Festival is the largest festival, celebrated in every town and village across the country. It features three sporting events: wrestling, archery and horse racing, amongst other traditional games and exhibits. • Eagle Festival draws about 400 eagle hunters on horseback to compete with their birds

Tuvan throat singing: Khoomei • Usually done by male herders (women are now beginning to throat sing) in Southern Siberia. • Singers sometimes will travel many miles to find the perfect spot in which to throat sing. • The worldview of this region identifies the spirituality of objects in nature, not by physical being, but in their sound as well. • Imitating the sounds of nature is the root of throat singing.

Music • Indian classical music has strong roots in folk • 2 styles: • Hindustani: North India • Carnatic: South India • Raga: • Scale system used in India • 5 or more notes on which a melody is built • “to color” the mind/ emotions (Sanskrit) • Specific ragas used at different times of day or different seasons • Some ragas have the same notes- but the way they are approached is different.

Influence on the world • Just as other music genres began to influence Indian music (pop, rock, hiphop etc.), Indain music influenced those genres • Most popular in the 70’s • Inspired the Beatles!- Listen! • Any songs you can think of that sound like they may have Indian influences?
