As one side was perceived to get ahead the other felt the need to catch up= spiral=ARMS RACE
How was this different from other arms races in history? • The huge destructive power • So great it would AVOID war

RESULTS AND IMPACT OF THE ARMS RACE • MAD – Mutually Assured Destruction • By 1960 both Superpowers had MASSIVE weapon capability • These could be delivered in a variety of ways – land, air, sea
