Discussion • How would you define “beauty” – is it different for people vs. things? • “Beauty is only skin deep.” – This means beauty is only on the surface (like the skin), not underneath in someone’s heart, mind, or soul. Do you agree? • Do people (men or women) in your country change themselves to become more “beautiful”? What do they do?
Pre-Reading Skills • Check background knowledge • Complete the survey on p. 22. Do you understand all of the vocabulary? • Predict what you are going to read about • Look at pictures and titles • Scan (quickly read) and answer the questions in Part B. • Look for adjectives and nouns as key words and underlinethem • Ex: Maya crossed eyes, beautiful, balls, children’s eyes
Pre-Reading Skills After predicting, read your questions before looking at the reading. Gist: main idea(use titles, subtitles, first paragraph) Detail: read all the choices and look for key words Main idea: (look for topic sentences) Inference: not directly stated – use overall idea Vocabulary/Reference: read entire sentence with key word

Homework: Reading Journal #2 • Type one paragraph (4-5 sentences) on the following topic: • Do you agree that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”? This means that every person has a different definition or idea about what is beautiful. Explain why you do or do not agree.
