INDUSTRY STATS • Ranked Asia’s No. 1 convention city for 19 consecutive years and world’s top 5thfor 3 years running Source: Union of International Associations, 2001 • MICE sector attracts up to 400,000 overseas visitors annually to Singapore • Contributed SGD 3.5 billion to Singapore’s gross total output in 2001 (0.70% of GDP) • Provides some 15,000 jobs Source: Singapore Tourism Board, 2002

AT PEAK OF SARS Apr / May 2003 • Official advisories against travel to Singapore issued by various Governments • SARS and Iraq war resulted in fall of visitorship to Singapore • Visitor arrivals decreased by 67.3% (418,375 visitors) over same period in April 2002 • 41.9% - 72.0% fall from five largest visitor markets - Australia, PR China, Indonesia, Malaysia & UK • Business related visitor arrivals fell 73.9% Source: Singapore Tourism Board, 2003

  5. AT PEAK OF SARS Apr / May / Jun 2003 • 25 trade shows & conventions were cancelled • 17 were rescheduled to take place in 2nd half of 2003 • 18 SACEOS members reported total losses of more than SGD 38 million • Estimated loss of economic spin-offs – SGD 260 million Source: SACEOS, 2003

  6. SARS-FREE 31 May 2003 • The World Health Organisation (WHO) removed Singapore from list of SARS affected countries

POST SARS • Strong % increase in visitors from all key markets in July • MICE industry on road to recovery • No event cancellations after July • 17 major events slated for last quarter of 2003 • PC Show (consumer event) attracted 387,000 visitors (140% increase from 2002)in June, a record high in its 13-year history • Cards Asia (trade event) in July registered healthy figures with 25% foreign participants

POST SARS • Forthcoming events in 2003 include: • SIBOS (SWIFT International Banking Operations Seminar) • Global Entrepolis @ Singapore • ICMAT & IUMRS International Conference in Asia • Mega fairs lined up in 2004: • Asian Aerospace (80% confirmed) • FHA-Food&HotelAsia (90% confirmed) • CommunicAsia2004/BroadcastAsia2004 (80% confirmed)

THE FUTURE Future Plans • Foster closer working relationships with MICE counterparts in the region to: • Collectively develop contingency plans for unforeseen circumstances such as SARS and terrorism • Attract more US/European visitors to region • Expand and upgrade talent pool in Singapore’s MICE sector

THE FUTURE • Enhance service quality standards and establish professional standards with the formation of Singapore Standards (SS) for the EMS industry leading eventually to ISO standards • Continually upgrade state of the art infrastructure to maintain world class standards. Convention venues include: • Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre • Singapore Expo • Raffles City Convention Centre • Organisation of IECM 2004 @ Singapore
