ADD TO YOUR SELF-CONTROL PATIENCE Introduction: A. II Pet. 1:6. Another building block to be added to the Christian’s foundation. It takes time to grow as all the others. James 1:4. B. Patience defined: endurance – persistence, perseverance – long suffering. Patience does not mean sitting down and doing nothing, but rather it means faithful continuance in a worthwhile pursuit, perseverance toward a goal.
C. One fault we must learn to overcome is lack of patience which often causes one to become discouraged or give up too easily. I. GOD IS PATIENT – Rom. 15:5. A. I Pet. 3:20 – Before the flood. B. God was patient with the Israelites: 1. When they tried God in the wilderness. Psa. 78:12-22
2. In the book of Judges we are impressed with God’s longsuffering toward Israel as they rebelled time and again. C. He is patient toward us – II Pet. 3:9. But God’s patience and mercy will come to an end in due time even as it did with the people in Noah’s time and Israel in the time of Moses.
II. BIBLE EXAMPLES OF PATIENCE: A. Job – James 5:10 – Notice Job 1, 2, & 42 to get the basic story of Job’s suffering and patience. 42:10, 12, 13 B. Abraham – Heb. 6:12-15. After he endured, he obtained the promises. C. Moses – Heb. 11:24-27. “endured” “reproach” D. Paul – II Cor. 6:45: Paul preached the gospel and established churches in much patience.” Phil. 3:14 – “Pressing toward”
III. “YE HAVE NEED OF PATIENCE.” Heb. 10:36 A. In trials, afflictions, and hardships. I Pet. 2:19-21. Don’t weaken! Rev. 2:10 B. We need to be patient with our brethren. Eph. 4:2 1. Must learn to suffer long and forbear with petty grievances and weaknesses 2. Sometimes a brother or sister will dis-
appoint us by ungodly conduct. We must endure with such disappointments without allowing such to overcome our faith. 3. We must try to help and encourage our brethren rather than giving up on them so quickly. C. With all men – I Thess. 5:14. D. With reference to answer of prayer – Psa. 37:7. Some become discouraged
because they do not seem to see and answer to their prayers. We must learn to “wait on the Lord.” E. In converting lost souls, keep at your efforts. Your labor is not in vain. I Cor. 15:58; Gal. 6:9. One lost soul saved is worth more than all the world. Matt. 16:26. F. In waiting for Christ’s coming – James 5: 7, 8; II Thess. 3:5. His delay is but a manifestation of God’s longsuffering for mankind – II Pet. 3:9; He will come in due time
IV. HOW PATIENCE IS DEVELOPED A. Through struggles and trials – Rom. 15:3 James 1:3. Just as the physical body increases in the ability to endure by exercises and rigorous competition, so the spiritual body is made stronger and better able to endure by trials and hardships. B. Through the scriptures – Rom. 15:4. Studying the Bible helps us grow in patience.
C. Through hope – Rom. 8:24. Hopes spurs us on and helps us persevere toward our goal. D. Through prayer . Matt. 7:7, 8 V. RESULTS OF PATIENCE: A. It perfects Christian character – James 1:4 B. It brings forth fruit. Luke 8:12 The farmer exercises patience as he
plants the seed and waits for the harvest. James 5:7, 8 . 1. So must we sow, toil, and endure patiently until we “reap with joy” Psa. 126:5, 6 2. Leads us to eternal life – Heb. 10:36; Rom. 2:7; II Thess. 1:4, 6; Rom. 8:18
Conclusion: 1. Almost any worthwhile achievement in life demands patience. To be successful as a Christian should be the highest goal of all and it takes patience to reach this goal. 2. Heb. 12:1, 2
