  6. Healing Environment • Home like atmosphere – restful / quiet • Natural light and views • Good sources of lighting • Lighting has a definite impact on reducing stress and improving patient safety

  7. Patient Room Features • Single bed rooms • Patients desire privacy • Lower nosocomial infections • Less noise & increased sleep quality • Better communication between patients & staff

  8. Patient Room Features cont. • Control of the environment • Acuity adaptable • Emphasis on patient safety • Hand washing facilities • Three zones –patient, family & staff

  9. Family Centered • Support involvement in care • Family zone area in room • Contributes to patient recovery times & outcomes

  10. Way Finding– the ability to find your way in a particular location • Needs to be easy for people with increased stress and anxiety • External signage is critical • Limited entrance / exit points

  11. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Universal Patient Room – lay out exactly the same - accommodates a wide variety of acuity needs – less confusion for patients – staff familiarity

  12. STAFF SATISFACTION • Adjacencies of units • Efficiency maximized – location of supplies • Work environment enhanced • Security • Overall satisfaction improved – increases effectiveness of care

  13. NEW TECHNOLOGY / EQUIPMENT • Integrated information system – EMR • Automated med. cabinets • Wireless communication • Patient equipment • Beds with exit alarms • Lift system
