#47 Warm UP Why isn’t there genetic variation in species that reproduce asexually? Make sure you have the Types of Reproduction Regents Practice – it is due next class!
How does asexual reproduction happen? • 1 parent • identical offspring • Mitosis: When a cell’s DNA is replicated and its nucleus divides in two • Binary fission : parent doubles in size and splits in half • Budding : offspring grows off of parent • Vegetative propagation : part of a plant is removed and grown into a full plant or a plant sends out a runner on which new plants grow • Cloning: a technique used to make identical organisms
Binary Fission Mitosis amoeba bacteria
Budding bud hydra yeast
Plants and Asexual Reproduction runner Strawberry plant Spider plant Plant bulbs offspring parent
How does cloning work? • One source of DNA – whole nucleus • Therapeutic cloning: use to grow organ or tissue • Reproductive cloning: used to grow an entire organism STEM CELL
Activity – Regents Practice • Look at the Regents question #8 from the HW sheet • Make a diagram to show the steps • Use your diagram to choose the best answer • Be ready to explain what you did. Extension: Work on the Regents Practice HOMEWORK. Work on VOCAB
