Pasteurella multocida • Gram-negative, non-motile Coccobacilli • Aerobic and facultatively AnO2 • A parasite of domestic and wild animals • May infect man >> after dog bite • Do not grow on MacConkey agar
Pathogenesis • A local abscess at the site of dog or cat bite, with cellulitis, adenitis and osteomyelitis (sometimes) • Meningitis following head injury • Infection of the respiratory system >> penumonia, bronchitis etc…
Laboratory Diagnosis • Specimen • Swabs from bite wounds • CSF from cases of meningitis • Secretions from suppurative respiratory tract infections • Culture • Blood agar • Identification • Cultural and Biochemical tests
Treatment • Penicillin, Tetracycline, Erythromycin, TMP-SMZ • Osteomyelitis following dog or cat bite >> 8 weeks treatment
