The Vowels i and u alone form syllables with corresponding consonants • Mina • Pico • Duda • Universidad
two vowels together form separate syllables except for when one is i or u- and sometimes y • the combination of i or u- with another vowel forms a diphthong. Creo Teo leemos Sea
u after q is not considered a vowel in words with the sequence qui or que • u after g is not considered a vowel in the gui or gue sequence except where indicated by dieresis – ü – bilingüe . • Consonants are separated unless they from a consonant cluster. • Combinations with r – p,t,c,b,d,g – prestar, traer, creer, abre, madre, grave • Combinations with l – plaza, clima, hablador, doble • Letter combinations representing one sound – ll, rr, ch
When dividing words into syllables in Spanish: • If you have a consonant between two vowels, divide before the consonant: u – va • If you have one of these combinations of consonants – Do NOT divide them. • Any other time you have 2 consonants together, divide between them. an – tes • When you have 2 vowels together, divide between them UNLESS one or both of them is an i or a u.
