Looking at Paper 2 Module A: Distinctively Visual Douglas Stewart’s poems
The Question • “It is much easier to consume the visual image than to read something” - Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Discuss this statement with reference to the ways that distinctively visual images have been presented in 2 or 3 poems of Douglas Stewart and at least one other related text of your own choosing.
What the question meant • How do your texts show the power of the image? • Imagery is a more powerful tool than just the written word. • You needed to talk about 2 or 3 of Douglas Stewart’s poems and one of your own related texts, which isn’t a poem.
Things that were done well.. • Most students had an understanding of the texts. • Most students attempted the response. • Most students were able to recall at least one of Stewart’s poems.
What needs to be improved? • Make sure that you have a sound knowledge of at least two, preferably three, of Stewart’s poems. • Make sure that you choose a related text that is a different text type to the prescribed text.
Make sure you stick to the set texts for study. • You need to make sure that you write about the techniques in the poems and your related text, not just recounted the text.
