The Trumpet Judgments The First Two Woes Revelation 8:13-9:21
An Angel warns the earth dwellers concerning the last three trumpet blasts. Trumpets 1-4 dealt with physical environment that man takes for granted. Trumpets 5-7 are signaled by Woes because of their severity.
The Fifth Trumpet • The identity of the falling star • The star refers to a being rather than a meteor. “to him” • The star is “fallen” in the perfect tense, which means a completed action. This occurred in the angelic rebellion long ago. (ref. Isa. 14:12-17, Luke 10:18, Rev. 12:4)
This creature is given the key to the bottomless pit (Gk. abussos). • The Abyss is the compartment for demons in Sheol/Hades. • This is the temporary place of confinement or detention for demons before judgment and being cast into the Lake of Fire. (Luke 8:31)
Not all demons are confined in the abyss currently. There are free demons, temporarily confined demons, and permanently confined demons. • This is the same place where Satan and the demons will be confined during the Millennium. (ref. Rev. 20:1-3)
The pit is in the center of the earth –this is the only way a pit can be bottomless. • Notice the smoke that comes out of the pit and causes all natural light to be obstructed. This is further evidence for the pit being in the center of the earth. • A third blackout will occur at this time.
Trumpet 5: • The Demon locust/scorpion Invasion. The first of two demonic invasions. • They are not to hurt vegetation and cannot hurt believers who have God’s mark. • They cannot kill anyone but can torment men 150 days.
Trumpet 5: • Tormented people will not be able to commit suicide. They will be forced to endure. • Their description • locust-scorpions • From the abyss which means they are demons • they have animal and human features. • Their king is Abaddon/Apollyon which is a high ranking demon.
Trumpet 6: • The second demonic invasion but this one is lead by four fallen angels. • 200 million are involved in the invasion • They ride other demonic creatures • They are clothed in the aura of Hell itself and kill with the deadly fire, smoke and poisonous gases. • They are located on the Euphrates, where Babylon is located. • Joel 1:15-2:11 describes these two demonic invasions
The result: • People refuse to repent and continues to worship the same demons which tormented them for five months and have just destroyed 1/3 of the human population or 1.2 billion. (6 victims per demon) • People can be made to fear God by His divine power but they will not be brought to the place of repentance without God’s grace and faith in Christ. (Eph 2:8-9)
Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly. Prov. 26:11 What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.” 2 Peter 2:22
Application 1. The core reason we choose to have idols and why we keep going back to them, even though they hurt and destroy us, comes from a lack of trust in God in that particular area of need or want.
Application • Romans 2:1-16 • God is displaying His kindness to the world by not exacting the divine penalty on humanity immediately so that they will come back to Him. • The reason why man does not respond to God’s kindness is from a hard heart. • Therefore, God’s wrath is being stored up and unleashed upon unbelievers in the Tribulation period.
