Formation of Sound Richard Fetter 3/6/14
3 processes -phonation -resonation -articulation
Phonation Sound -formed by vibrations in larynx Volume and pitch controlled by -respiratory muscles -vocal tract
Adductory Sound -folds held together produces vibration -forms consonants -full adduct is glottal stop
Abductory Sound -caused by expansion of folds -Partial opening is voiceless consonant
Sound pitch determined by -Position in vocal tract -Pressure changes -Narrow= higher pitch
Aperiodic Phonation • -Sound caused by airstream modification • -produces • Plosive • Fricative • Africative • Voiced
Resonation and Articulation -vocal tract is closed tube -vowels are harmonics 1, 3, 5 -determined by tongue position
